Big_Easy_Bassin Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Anyone have any other options for a small lipless crank other than the 1/4oz RES or Rat-L-Trap? I’ve also tried the Booyah... just looking for some lighter rattle baits to try out in the ponds. Quote
OCdockskipper Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 The older Heddon Bayou Boogie is a good lipless bait for ponds, but it will take a little work to find them (usually ebay). Another option is any of the blade baits on the market such as the Silver Buddy. They are essentially smaller versions of lipless crankbaits and I have had success with them on my home lake (100 acres). 2 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted October 1, 2019 Super User Posted October 1, 2019 I have these they have caught me more crappie than bass though. 3/16 & 1/16 https://www.cabelas.com/product/RAPALA-UL-RIPPINRAP/1837276.uts 2 Quote

The most popular size for open water is a #6 which is a half ounce that i use quite a bit. There's a #5 which is a 1/4 oz. 1 Quote

I do change out the smaller rear hook. 1 Quote
BigAngus752 Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 All of the Walmarts around here stock Cotton Cordell lipless in both 1/2 and 1/4. The 1/2s have caught a ton of fish for me, mostly because I will throw them literally into anything since they cost $2 each. 1 Quote
primetime Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Cotton Cordel has smaller spots that are 1/8 I believe that are good for throwing in ponds...The Bill Lewis Tiny trap is really small, but is a fun lure to fish as bluegill, crappie, bass and everything else in pond will hit them. BPS also makes some smaller sizes in 3/16 range. Sebile used to have a few really nice lipless baits that were small and silent but may be tough to find....Was the original Flatt Shads. Don't laugh, but the Creme Mad Dad Minnow is a good pond bait since it has one double hook that hangs and makes it mostly weedless and offer several sizes, good colors and it catches fish. For 1.99 its worth buying a few. I think BPS carries them, if not, You can find a lot of 3 on ebay for like $6. They come in I think 2",3",4" and have decent weight to them as well. 1 Quote

That is an under appreciated bass catcher . 3 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted October 1, 2019 Super User Posted October 1, 2019 LC LVR Mini -- absolutely deadly in shallow grass; those areas where you only have a foot or two between top of weeds and the surface Quote
Super User JustJames Posted October 1, 2019 Super User Posted October 1, 2019 There is rat’l trap, tiny trap 1/8 oz. I also like what @QUAKEnSHAKEmentioned Rapala UL series ripping rap. I have these 2 cranks in my cart and ready to check out. I target crappies not bass but sometime get bass as a bonus. As of now I only use Lucky Craft vibration 50SP 2” 1/8oz. 2 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted October 1, 2019 Super User Posted October 1, 2019 I don't like tiny lipless lures, but the 1/4 oz Cotton Cordell, Sugar Shad and Diamond Shad (ok, ok and the RES too...) work well for me when I want a smaller lipless. Quote
Big Rick Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Lucky Craft LV 100. It's only 2.5" long yet weighs in at 1/2 oz so you can still bomb it!! It's wider head keeps the head down and hooks away from the grass. Lucky Craft built this baits specifically for grass applications. But, it still does great on ponds and schoolies. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 3, 2019 Super User Posted October 3, 2019 Yo-Zuri Mini Vibe is 1/3 oz, 1 5/8" long. I like the Vibe series lures work on the fall and on the retrieve. Don't know why a Tiny 1/8 oz or mini 1/4 oz trap is off your list for ponds? One of the best pond lures is a broken back Rapala minnow. Tom Quote

Yeah don’t see many mention Cotton Cordell. It is widely available and pretty cheap. Today was a good day and I targeted bass instead of crappie. I took my old cotton Cordell 1/4oz and this is a result. (Lost one at beginning due to too loose drag, and I haven’t caught 12” crappie for awhile) Quote
