rtwvumtneer6 Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Looking for another jig/pitching rod. Something around 7'3". 3/8oz being the lightest lure I would throw and maxing out at about 1oz. Interested in Powell and Dobyns, but I've not used either. Looking at models from $120-$150. Which company would you choose? Thanks! Quote
Smalls Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Which lines from each company where you looking at? I have rods from both companies. I was not a fan of the Powell inferno rods, but I love my max 3D. It’s a lot heavier than my fury 705, but it’s also a 775, 7’7 mag m/h. 2 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted October 1, 2019 Super User Posted October 1, 2019 Dobyns all day long and double on Sunday? 2 Quote

I like your logic. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 1, 2019 Super User Posted October 1, 2019 I've had a Powell Inferno for about 2 yrs now & have zero complaints. It's a 7' medium heavy extra fast, it's better suited 1/2 oz or less. For your requirements the 7' 2" mag heavy would be my choice. 1 Quote
LonnieP Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 I have a Dobyns Fury and a Powell Endurance. I prefer the Powell. 2 Quote
Junger Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 (edited) I have the Max 3D 7'1 MH/XF spinning rod, purchased for $130 when they had a website sale. I've never handled a Dobyn's. In comparison to a couple Tatula (original black and gold version) that I had which are around the same price, or less sometimes, the Max 3D felt more vibrant in detecting strikes, or banging structure/bottom. The cork on the Powell is nothing to write home about, but at that price point it's the quality you'd expect. Edited October 1, 2019 by Junger cork quality Quote

There’s been a few times where I thought “this rod should have just snapped in half”, and it’s still going strong. 4 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted October 1, 2019 Super User Posted October 1, 2019 Another vote for the Powell. I have a Powell Max and I love it. Have used and abused it for 2 years and it is still going strong. 2 Quote
swhit140 Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 I have a Dobyns Sierra 703C, I've been happy with it so far. It is very light. I've never used a Powell so I don't have experience with them. You might be able to find a good deal on the Dobyns Sierra models near Christmas season, I paid $122.00 for mine. I would recommend if your looking at a Dobyns to go up one power of what your looking for. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 Powell all day long and twice on Sunday. Quote
WPCfishing Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 I don’t think you will be unhappy with either of them. It seems to me Dobyns is a much bigger company but that really doesn’t make a difference. They both offer the same reel seat, quality cork, guides and blanks. Quote
DanielG Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 I've got a Dobyn's fury on my spinning set. It's good. I don't have a negative but it's not special either... but. I've got a Dobyn's champion 735c mh glass. This rod is absolutely amazing. I love using it. stronger and pricier than you indicated but I threw in my 2cents anyway. Quote

r83srock Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Powell has been around a really long time. Both rods are imported, both companies have a good reputation, don’t think you could go wrong either way. My dad has a Powell inferno 7’3” H that he won, he’s using it mostly for frogs and it seems to handle it’s specified weight range well, maybe doing a bit better on the lower end of the range. I can’t speak on behalf of sensitivity, as there was a frog on it when I used it, but it sure is lightweight and balanced! 1 Quote
rtwvumtneer6 Posted October 5, 2019 Author Posted October 5, 2019 Found myself at field and stream today and picked up a Dobyns Fury 734. Got it for $100 w/ a coupon. Prob end up being a spinnerbait/chatterbait/senko rod. Checking out a Powell Max for the heavier stuff. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted October 5, 2019 Posted October 5, 2019 For what it is worth, Gary Dobyns used to work with Powell rods. But, that was a number of years ago. For $100 off, I would have done that as well. Enjoy the rod and post pictures of fish you catch on it. Wdy Quote
