LonnieP Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 I've tried the Ned rig for the first time the past 2 times out fishing. The only heads I could find local were the Zman Weedless Shroomz and I'm pretty disappointed in the quality of them. First off the weedgaurd is too stiff for a good hookup and second thing is these hooks break way too easy. Who makes a decent Ned rig jig head? 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted September 26, 2019 Super User Posted September 26, 2019 I like ones I found at Walmart - 1/16 oz - size 2 hook - decent bait holder - mushroom head - made by Arkie - reasonable price. An alternative is a Brewer Slider Spider head 1/16 or 1/8 rigged tex-posed. 2 Quote
Super User MickD Posted September 26, 2019 Super User Posted September 26, 2019 Buy jigs with a wire bait holder, not a molded lead one. It is about impossible to get a Ned properly placed on a lead bait holder. Also try to stick with fairly light wire hook so you don't lose the Ned material's buoyancy advantage. 1 Quote

I’ve been using the weedless Shroomz for a while and haven’t found the weed guard keeps me from getting good hookups at all. The weed guard is good at letting me toss the bait into downed trees without getting snagged. I did see some hooks breaking on the first Z Man jigs I bought, but on all of my newer ones, I’ve seen the hooks just bend when I pull them out of a snag. My only real gripe with them is the price. 3 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted September 26, 2019 Super User Posted September 26, 2019 Agreed to this ^^^^, the weed guard on 1/10 Zman shroom only 2 stands of thin wire. I don’t see any problem with hook up. You can trim one weed guard off easily. I only use 1/10 weedless shroom with medium size bait, like baby brush hog, hula grub and Zman turbo crawZ. If you don’t need weed guard, you can try 1/16 Berkeley half head jig, I had pretty good result with it, the price pretty reasonable and wildly available. picture of a 4-5lbers caught last week. 2 Quote

I haven't caught anything using the Ned rig yet. I've gotten several bites but haven't been able to hook one yet. A lot of reviews on the TW site say the weed guards are a problem so I assumed this was my problem. I did manage to break 2 hooks pulling snags loose. 1 hour ago, A-Jay said: Only two I'll throw at this point . . . JediAmoeba Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 I think the shrooms work great when using the zman plastics. I haven't caught any huge fish but I have caught over 400 and have never had one break - if they are breaking you are probably using too heavy line, don't have your drag set properly and are muscling them. This is a finesse technique... If I am using non-elaztec though i go to owner blockheads or some local ones that have a better keeper on them. 2 Quote

I did manage to break 2 hooks pulling snags loose. Gotten several bite but no hook up, that is probably small sunfish. They love Ned rig with TRD too. if you manage to pull and break 2 hooks from snag, you are using too big of a line. If you snag a lot, try lighter weight possible 1/16 and 1/20oz and fish faster you will be surprised how many you can catch just swim it a long the bottom. Or you could try EWG Ned head (i’ve Never try that but might try one soon). I almost always beat up my TRD or 1/2 ZinkerZ before put it on hook to make is softer and more buoyancy. This one caught in 1/20oz Zman Head 6lbs line. 2 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted September 26, 2019 Super User Posted September 26, 2019 I tried several and liked none, so I bought the Midwest Finesse jig mold so I could make them the way I wanted them. I use 3 sizes of hooks 2, 1, and 1/0 depending on the type of area I am fishing. 3 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 26, 2019 Super User Posted September 26, 2019 Berkley half head jigs are hard to beat. They are reasonably priced and the quality is great. 5 Quote
Super User Bird Posted September 26, 2019 Super User Posted September 26, 2019 I throw the Zman on fairly light tackle and small craw, works great. I throw Ned everytime I'm in clear water, fun way to fish. 2 Quote

Definitely going to order some 1/16 to try. I'm using 7lb Sniper. Quote

Hook2Jaw Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 Another vote for the Berkley Half Head. The only gripe I have about them is if I was a Ned aficionado they don't have many different sizes or colors available, but I'm not, so having some 1/16, 1/8, and 1/4 in the boat is fine with me. 2 Quote
tander Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 Found Jade's Jigs a little while back. Work great. https://jadesjigs.com/ 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted September 27, 2019 Super User Posted September 27, 2019 Z man makes ones called nedlockz jig heads that are much stronger and more durable. I have been using those instead of the standard wire ones and they won’t bend. 4 Quote
BigAngus752 Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 If you want a better “weed less” Ned-style presentation, I am having great success with Lifted Jigs Ned EWG heads. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 27, 2019 Global Moderator Posted September 27, 2019 Seibert Morel head would be a good option to look into. I personally went with the create my own option. Never seen a need for a weedguard. I fish them in some moderately snaggy areas and they rarely hang up even with the open hook. 4 Quote

Allen Der Posted September 28, 2019 Posted September 28, 2019 I burned through my stock of shroomz and restocked with the eagle claw Lazer sharp pro v finesse jigs. Definitely better and stronger than the regular zman and works well with elaztec. Also cheaper than owner and others. Wasn't impressed with the nedlocks either Quote

Super User Darren. Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Interesting that you're breaking the Shroomz hooks! I like them in the weedless version and haven't found the weed guards to be too stiff. I use them on 6, 8, and 10# leaders, drag set to zing a tad when I set the hook. Quote
LonnieP Posted March 20, 2020 Author Posted March 20, 2020 I've used the Owner and Berkley jigs since I started this thread and they work well. I think the reason I couldn't get a good hookset is because I'm pretty sure it was small Bluegill hitting it. I caught some bass on my remaining Shroomz and after catching a few bass the weedguard pretty much gets destroyed. Also the hooks break too easy pulling snags loose. Quote
