rlm1 Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 Not sure if this is the correct place for this, so thought I'd try. Central Va., Mighty James for smallmouth. Looking to see if there are any known guides on the James around the Richmond area, not so much tidal James, maybe Watkins Landing section? Back in the late 70s to early 90s, used to fish there a lot from the landing to Bosher's Dam, and caught large and smallmouth, usually doing very well with jig and pig and rubber worms. So, maybe the brain trust can come up with something on this? I've done searches and just not really finding much. There are some way out west towards the head waters, but I can't travel that much any more because of spinal arthritis and an 8 hour day on the water may not be in the cards for me now days and a 3 to 4 hour drive 1 way! Thanx folks, nice weekend coming up, wet a line! rlm1 Randy Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 Hi Randy, I can't help you much with guides in that area, but there are several members in the Lynchburg-to-Powhatan region that might know of someone. I haven't been fishing down that way, but smallmouth fishing there is supposed to be pretty much like it is up here - not good. Bruce Ingram talked to our club a couple of months back and said that the spawns didn't go well the past few years and it was taking a toll on the smallmouth all over Virginia. So if you can't find a guide for what you were originally looking to do, it may be a good thing. The fishing may not be what you remember it was. I've been fishing lakes and the tidal Potomac more this year due to how bad the smallmouth fishing has been. If you want to catch a bunch of fish, the tidal James or one of the reservoirs around might be a better bet. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted September 14, 2019 Super User Posted September 14, 2019 Unfortunately you are correct about the diminished smallmouth numbers In VA. I talked with DNR and was informed that record rainfall basically eliminated the spawn. 1 Quote
