anglermangler Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 Ok. so I'm about to buy a 14' jon boat from a guy at work that only fishes off the banks due to hip surgery. He's selling it too me for $250 (thought it was a decent price) now i'm just wondering what kind of set ups you guys are running, I'm wanting a pretty strong trolling motor as thats all that will be on it and i don't want to spend half my day going to my spots. Also i was considering a foot control trolling motor so i could have it go from anywhere in the boat but my issue there is how do i steer with a foot control motor from say the middle of the boat? Lets see what some of you all have done with your jon boats, I know with ply wood and marine carpet the sky is the limit. AnglerMangler Quote
Splat Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 Your only options from controlling from the middle of the boat is to go with a electric steer model. Like a minnkota Terrova. Some guys don't like them, however I have one and love it. I have the standard foot pedal plus the wireless co-pilot remote that attaches to the current rod I'm using. I'm really happy with mine and would highly recommend them to anybody, the cost is more for one, but on a boat like mine they were the only real option. Also if you go with an electric steer, spend they few extra dollars and get one with "Autopilot" You'll never look back, it's almost really a necessity. Here's some from cabelas, they sell reconditioined ones, that's what I bought and have been very happy with it. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0055423013620a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=reconditioned&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=reconditioned&noImage=0 bill Quote
anglermangler Posted August 9, 2008 Author Posted August 9, 2008 awesome, thanks for the info, also looking for like a 10 hp gas powered motor as well so the rear stick steer as i call it may be my best bet. AnglerMangler Quote
Poolie727 Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 Once again, I learned something on this great forum. I'm also am close to getting a 14 footer and am starting to look at TM's. I had no idea there was such a thing as electric steer. Splat, you say that some folks don't like them, do you know what it is that they don't like? Looks pretty cool to me. PS: $250 sounds like a GREAT deal! Wish I could find one for that. Quote

anglermangler Posted August 13, 2008 Author Posted August 13, 2008 well i got the info on the boat at work last night and was a little disappointed as it turns out it is a fiberglass coleman crawdad jon boat. I'm really not sure if i want a fiberglass jon boat or if it would have too much upkeep. let me know what you guys think about it, i mean it is only $250 how ever i'm gonna see if my fiances dad would be willing to sell me his 10' lowe. Hey, I'm in Indiana but not opposed to traveling to get it if the price is right. How much are you wanting out of it? AnglerMangler Quote
anglermangler Posted August 15, 2008 Author Posted August 15, 2008 just got word of another guy at working selling a 12' alumicraft jon boat with a trailer, trolling motor (14 thrust pound), AND a 7.5 hp motor for $550. I was gonna try and go look at it and go for a "test ride" this weekend but the guy had a vacation day so doesn't look like it will happen this weekend but just wanted to see what you guys thought about the deal, it sounds pretty darn good to me. bassboy1 Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Heres mine. http://tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=4077 15 foot 7 inch long, 42 inch bottom. 40 horse Evinrude 1975 model tiller, 40 pound thrust MK All Terrain, Bow and "console" Eagle fishmark sonars, All aluminum deck and structure. 8 foot rod locker. etc. Runs close to 30 mph with that outboard. Might be able to breach 30 with a different prop, or 35 with a newer 40 horse. Fishes great. Very stable, plenty of storage, fairly good layout etc. 2 guys can stand on the bow deck without it acting real squirrely. Quote
