Newly Addicted To Frog Fishing!

Hi, my name is Kris and I am a Frog addict!  Hi Kris......

 

In the past I have thrown a frog for very short periods and never stuck with it (10 cast and move on) to see the beauty of this technique.  Recently, one of my favorite spots started to get a ton of top water cover and a friend mentioned he started to throw a frog and the place lit up!  So I set up a pole and tied on the only frog I had (Booyah, Poppin Frog Black) and we went out to really try this technique.  Needless to say, I am now a convert!  I only want to fish a frog!  Muck, open water, a single floating leaf...anything! There is nothing better than the blow up, the hook set and the fight on a frog!  Nothing!

 

Initially, I had my Veritas, H set up (This thing is a pool cue) and struggled with walking my frog, and casting as accurately as I was accustomed to.  I went down in power to my favorite rod (Lews TP1 MH 7') that has plenty of backbone and a tip that really helps with casting and walking.  I know a lot of guys will have the opinion of Heavy, XHeavy for this application, and I might move that way if the right rod comes along, but for now I like what I am using.  

 

I have watched way to many frog videos and read all the hacks and am completely engaged with this technique.  I am curious how long this bite normally last in to the fall, but am already looking forward to a full season next year!

Nice! I just started dabbling with it but haven't had luck yet.  2 good blow ups (didn't get either hooked) , a few slaps but nothing consistent enough to keep me trying.  Using a Lunkerhunt natural looking frog, skirt legs.  I can never get past 10 casts myself.

I just got into Frogs and Toads this year too , for the same reason , a chara explosion on the lake I frequent . I've never knew bass to  blast a top water so ferociously . I dont have the right equipment either but will make do . I'm using a 7 foot mh with 15 lb Big Game .

When I first learned about frogs they were a game changer for me, I caught my first bass over 5lbs on a frog in heavy slop. I’ll throw them as long as there is emergent vegetation or overhead cover. Once that stuff dies off I find other baits more effective but they will still get bit in open water.

My set up now is the Lews TP1 MH - 7' with 65# braid and a Booyah Poopin, Booyah Pad Crasher 

 

I watched a video with Dean Rojas and he uses a similar set up - good for him, good for me!

 

There also seems to be 2 camps on the hook sets, either wait or swing on the blowup!  I am in the later group and my hook up ratio is quite high!  My thoughts, from my limited experience, are that they either hit it or miss it all together.  That is why I swing!  Seems to be working.  I have caught multiple 3 and 4 + (nothing 5, YET!) already and my quality of fish on this technique seems to be high.

Welcome to the club. My best frog days I’ve ever had were in early to mid October and I’m in Michigan. The pads were dying off and almost every cast I was getting a blow up. There were two days about a week apart, same lake. The second day was the best, it was windy, spitting rain, and about 50-55 degrees out. My wife and I only caught about a half dozen but the smallest was 2.5 and I caught my PB at 5-4 or 5-6. We had a couple in the 4 pound range and a couple in the 3 pound range. I wish we could’ve stayed out but my John boat at the time was getting blown all over.

I’m a frog fishing addict as well, it too is my favorite.  I use a regular scum frog, a Strike King frog, and a booyah popping frog depending on conditions, with the popping frog getting the most use. I keep my colors simple, chartreuse, white, or black belly. I prefer to throw them on a 7’1” mh rod, with 40lb braid, but if it’s nasty cover I throw it on my 7’4” H with 65lb. Either setup has a 8:1 ratio reel attached. Frog fishing is so addicting, and produces some of my biggest bites of the year for me, consistently from year to year.

Top water fishing is my favorite. I'll take 3 top water over 10 underwater bass. 

 

I had some luck with hollow body frogs and a lot of success with Ragetail Toads. 

 

But when I started using Whopper Frogs it was game on and never the same. 

 

All I throw for top water now are Whopper Ploppers and Whopper Frogs. I don't even bring my buzzbaits or KVD Sexydawgs anymore.

That’s interesting and I admire that as i prefer to keep things simple. I like the Plopper frogs but haven’t had enough success with them yet to have them in the arsenal, although I’d like them to be! Are you throwing the teckel sprinker? The whopper Plopper I am just starting out on.

I had a lot of misses with Teckel Sprinker and Booyah Toadrunner. 

 

I started making my own and had been killing it ever since all season long.

I'm the exact opposite. I don't really like fishing frogs, but at times it's the best or only option. I will fish something else if the cover allows it, but there is no denying a frog often catches big fish.

I have a Cabela's ZX frog-specific model. It's a pool cue as well. It does affect your ability to walk the frog, but it's nice to be able to drag the fish up, out of and across slop and lilies. The trick is have a bit of slack in the line to pop against and it will walk. 

 

Fish will bite the frog in colder water than you'd think. I was able to get a few bites earlier this spring than I had ever tried before. If you have a dedicated combo for it, just keep trying it until it doesn't work. Then, when it's too cold you can use that combo as a second jig pitching rod. One cool method that works in cooler water is to cast the frog over a limb and dangle it into the water like it fell in and is struggling to get out. If you scoured YouTube, you've already seen this on Bamabass's channel. just fish it slower as the water cools.
