I'm looking for a new trolling motor for my 16.5ft Sea Nymph Fishing Machine 161B and 2 trolling motors that i like are the MotorGuide X3 and the Minn Kota Edge. To the people who own both these trolling motors in the pass or present what are your pro's and cons about them?

i joined this forum just to reply to your post. i have a 17.5 bass boat with a x3 70lbs. 24volt. i really like the power and speeds but a problem for me and others is that you cannot set the drag on your foot pedal. it is really easy to move the pedal and for me i will oversteer the motor. they do sell a aftermarket contraption to be able to adjust the drag but why pay 40 dollars for something that should be built in. i have searched the web on this and it is a known problem. so i actually copied the part they sell and it works for me but if i was to do it over i might look at another brand.

good luck,

Did you look at the X3 manual, adjusting the cable tension screw located inside bottom of the pedal? It's factory pre set but also adjustable.

I ran a MotorGuide X3 (55 lb thrust) on a 14 ft mod-V Tracker jon because I wanted something basic, simple, mechanical cable steer but with some digital smarts built in for battery management. It seemed to be the sweet spot between simplicity and digital smarts. It performed flawlessly (for several months until the boat got hit) and I never ran out of power, nor did I ever feel the need to run full powre. Ran it from a single 12 VDC Group 24 battery (again, simplicity... and reduced weight). Highly recommended; I'd buy it again. Not sure if your 16.5 ft'er will want more thrust; check into that.

i did look into the manual. the only adjustment under the pedal is the cable slack tension. manual said to adjust steering tension hand operated models only. this is what they want you to buy. https://hydrillagear.com/products/th-marine-g-force-troll-perfect-for-motorguide-x3-5-red     .  i went to the home depot plumbing supplies and built my own. if i'm wrong then send me a link on how to adjust it so i can adjust mine.

thanks,

X3 manual page 29 adjusting the foot pedal cable tension; photo of the adjustment screw inside bottom of the foot pedal is illustrated. It's. Online.

there is a difference between the tension of your cables and how easy the foot pedal moves. cable tension is how tight the cables are. like a loose chain on a chain saw. i have my foot pedal turned over as i speak and i see the tension adjustment. it is for cable slack. if you over tighten it it will wear out the pulleys. great discussion though.
