Ghostshad Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 I read a article on the underhand cast.It said if you were hitting to the right or to the left of Your target You were either holding your rod tip to low or to high upon Your release.I can't find the article. Can anyone give Me some Help on the problem. JediAmoeba Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 It can also be the rod. If the rod doesn't have the guides put on with the natural spine it can cause the rod to throw off, left or right as it loads and unloads. Record one of your casts from behind and you can see this occurring sometimes. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted September 10, 2019 Super User Posted September 10, 2019 I t might also be that the weight of the lure that you're throwing is too light for the loading of the rod or the cast settings on the reel. Sometimes people's underhand casts are a LOT slower than their sidearm or overhand casts. ? jj Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 10, 2019 Super User Posted September 10, 2019 Underhand cast? Flip, pitch, roll, loop, skip what underhand cast are you asking about? Spinning or casting? What is your dominate eye verses dominate hand? Tom Quote
Ghostshad Posted September 10, 2019 Author Posted September 10, 2019 Baitcast, Right eye,Right hand, JimmyHouston in casting principles calls it a underhand cast. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted September 11, 2019 Super User Posted September 11, 2019 And if you watch videos of Houston using that cast, you'll see how his rod loads up. He's famous for using 1 oz. spinnerbaits. Is your rod loading up like that? If it is, then I'd say that you're right; your timing is off. If your rod isn't loading like his does, then I'd say you've got either too stiff a rod tip or too light a spinnerbait ....... or your motion is too slow. His underhand cast is lightning-quick, which puts a lot of stored energy into the rod. The thing is, it took him years to get that down pat. ?? jj 1 Quote
mcipinkie Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 IMHO, you're either taking your eyes off the target, or you have the spool tension too tight. Get on the Tube and watch Swindle cast. He describes it as "years of excessive practice". I've been throwing bait casters over 60 years. I think I'm good, but not that good. Now you know the secret. There ain't no other one. I 1 Quote

The reason I ask if anyone is left eye dominate and cast right handed to will always land to the right side for example. What Jimmy Houston may call underhand cast is more of a sidearm arm unless he is using a roll cast or pitching. Back in the day when pistol grip 5 1/2' to 6' rods the underhand cast was popular, very difficult to perform with trigger grip 7' rods and no reason to try when a roll cast is more accurate. mcipinkie Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 Don't like to get into a discussion, but I'm left eyed dominant. I can cast with either hand, pitch, flip, roll, underhand, backhand, long rod, short rod, don't matter. I can do it, just not as good as Swindle. Years of excessive practice is what it takes. No other secrets except watch the target, loosen the spool tension, practice, practice, practice. Quote
