5/0 Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 I've looked at a bunch of "How To' videos and forum posts on the best ways to apply line conditioner. Has anyone here tried applying it to factory spools a day before spooling up a reel? You would still have to apply to line on reels the night before a trip. But it would be easier than applying every several cranks or running line through a cloth soaked with conditioner when spooling up. The only problem I could think of is some reaction to the plastic on the line spool, but there are plastic parts on a reel and it doesn't seem to affect them. Would it work? Joe Quote
MBB Nate Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Spraying it on the spool wont help since most of the line will never touch the spool itself. I just spray down before hand, when i get out i spray again and I also spray my guides. Another thing you can do is stretch your line if its that bad. If youve got a boat just drop a line off the rear while trolling or if youre bank fishing hook onto something and walk out 150 ft or so. Quote
5/0 Posted September 7, 2019 Author Posted September 7, 2019 Sorry if I wasn't too clear. I was talking about spraying it on the line of a newly purchased spool before putting it on your reel. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 7, 2019 Super User Posted September 7, 2019 The line on the top of the filler spool ends up at the bottom of the reel spool. Filler spools are narrow so only a small amount of line will get coated with KVD line conditioner if that is water you are using. Yes, you can run line thorough a conditioner wetted cloth to coat the line and you can spray on conditioner in layers as you fill the spool. I don't like spray on line conditioners, liquid TangleFree works better for me for all those reasons. Tom 1 Quote
5/0 Posted September 7, 2019 Author Posted September 7, 2019 Tom, Are you talking about the Tangle Free used on hair? It works just as well? Joe Quote

You never know hair tangle free will work? Tom PS, LPS greaseless silicone spray works, we used on tournament off shore big game reels line for a few decades. 1 Quote

You should try it, it might work and make you line smell good and smooth as silk for a day lol. Anyway I don’t use line conditioner with fresh newly spool line. I think new line from factory is still soft and have not developed memory just yet, especially when you gonna use the next day. Also when newly spool line yourself, it’s might not perfect, tight and smooth even lay on spool, until after fishing for a day or two. 1 Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted September 8, 2019 Posted September 8, 2019 I soak (spray heavily) all of my new spools of mono (Trilene Big Game) with line conditioner. Certainly hasn't hurt the line. Not sure if it helps either because I also always spray it down on the reel the night before I go out. 1 Quote
johnD. Posted September 8, 2019 Posted September 8, 2019 303 space age protectant works well for me. Quote

Tensile properties don't change, line can take a set from time under pressure or wide change in temperatures, otherwise it's the same regarding memory. Wear and abrasion affects line strength. I put line conditioner on FC while I spool new line. Tom Quote

Super User JustJames Posted September 8, 2019 Super User Posted September 8, 2019 @WRBThat why I don’t use conditioner when freshly spool the line. I’d rather fish a couple time before. I don’t spray conditioner when store the reel either, only one night before fishing. I’ll strip the line out about 10-15yds, spray then reel in the rest of the line and spray again. I’m not sure if use line conditioner on new fleshly line from manufacturer spool would help. Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 8, 2019 Super User Posted September 8, 2019 I don't spray on line conditioner, a few drops of liquid conditioner on FC line helps to reduce memory and wet the line as I fish, both caring and spinning reels. Conditioner isn't going to aid in the line being tighter on the spool, line tightness is deterime by the user. You fish in SoCal then you know how dry the air is during the summer and how windy it is in the afternoons. Dry hot windy conditions affects FC line casting performance. KVD L&L is long gone in a few hours, that is why I like Tangle Free to apply as needed, no memory issues casting in the dry wind. Tom Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted September 8, 2019 Super User Posted September 8, 2019 I use KVD cond. now, but I think I'm gonna order some Tangle Free Monday. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted September 8, 2019 Posted September 8, 2019 I have used KVD since the day it hit the market and have hosed down new spools and again on my reels on mono, flouro and braid. All I know is I have never had a line problem of any kind no matter the type, or size. Is that because of the KVD? I don’t know, but never a line problem. Quote
