MBB Nate Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 I bought a Savage Browser casting rod and noticed there is EVA under the reel seat. As far as I remember, every rod I've ever had has had open blank exposed there. Does anyone else have a rod like this or know why this would be this way? My understanding was the blank is left exposed there to pass vibrations to the reel to improve sensitivity. I haven't had a chance to fish it yet so I don't even know if this makes a difference. Tim Kelly Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 That whole exposed blank thing is a nonsense. Just fish the rod and you'll either like it or you won't, but it won't be because you do or don't have a tiny hole in the reel seat so you can touch the blank. Quote
MBB Nate Posted September 6, 2019 Author Posted September 6, 2019 I just thought it was odd because I never remember seeing a rod like this. The more I think about it, do reel feet even touch the blank since they sit in the reel seat? Quote
Tim Kelly Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 The reel foot doesn't touch the blank, the idea is that some part of your hand touches the blank which magically increases the feel you get through the rod. Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 6, 2019 Super User Posted September 6, 2019 The baitcasting reel feet must be mounted onto a solid reel seat, nothing spongy underneath it or it will not be a solid mount. Can't visualize what the OP is saying? EVA or cork handle behind the rear seat or foregrip in front of the reel locking seat/ring. Tom Quote
MBB Nate Posted September 6, 2019 Author Posted September 6, 2019 Here is a photo of the same rod. See where the foam is covering the blank under the reel seat. Quote
mrpao Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Shouldn't matter at all. Its probably just something they did to be different from the rest of the crowd. Personally I wouldn't like it because I dont like the feel of EVA but everyone is different. Some rods have cork or wood under the reel seat. Just a design difference to add appeal. Quote

I see, the reel foot mount is solid the space between had EVA sponge rubber covering the rod blank under the reel. That would bother me. Tom Quote
DSTN Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 I have the 7-4 Browser Casting rod. I've been using it for moving baits and I really like it for that application. The foam on the blank is different but hasn't bothered me any. Quote
Smalls Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Probably added to cushion your fingers. I know for me, if I fish certain techniques all day, my fingers are sore from gripping right there. Quote
MBB Nate Posted September 8, 2019 Author Posted September 8, 2019 So i took it out tonight, it has an alphas sv mounted on it. I didnt catch anything but it doesnt feel any different than exposed blank. In a lighter note, my 4yr old is able to fish that reel and not backlash. He managed to catch 2 fish on a weightless 3.5in keitech ez shiner. Now hes got 2 and I've never caught a fish on that rod or reel! 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 8, 2019 Posted September 8, 2019 That’s a skeleton seat with an Eva insert. They can be pretty much any material. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 8, 2019 Posted September 8, 2019 Acrylic is a popular material along with cork, wood and others Quote
