BroIncarnate Posted September 4, 2019 Posted September 4, 2019 Hey guys, My bud is JUST starting to fish and has a realllllly strict budget on his rod at $40-- I was thinking maybe the Ugly Stik Gx2, since he can't break it and well it's not the worst rod out there-- He's got a $30 budget on the reel, so I was thinking the Shimano Sienna 2500. Anyway, I'd like to see what other options are out there-- Thanks! Quote
greentrout Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Entsport. Kastking. Bass Pro Shops. H20 Express. that ugly stik gx2 will catch bass ... good fishing ... 1 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted September 5, 2019 Super User Posted September 5, 2019 Lightning rod or kast king. Ugly Stik, while it has its place is my last choice. 2 Quote
matbellon3 Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 The normal Berkley Lightning rod.(not the shock ) 3 Quote
PourMyOwn Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Dicks puts their Lews Carbon fire rods on sale for 39.99 a couple of times a year. 1 Quote
Mikeltee Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Medium Ugly Stik elite. It was my first ned rig rod. Anything < MH power is going to be super sensitive. He can do plastics and shallow cranks on this rod. I wouldnt take it much over 1/4oz trigs/jigs. For medium cover + he will need a MH. 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted September 5, 2019 Global Moderator Posted September 5, 2019 Kastking for the rod and look for the Abu Garcia Blackmax reel. Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Maybe he could squeeze out another $10 or so and get a Pflueger President combo. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 5, 2019 Super User Posted September 5, 2019 My first choice would be a Pflueger Trion and Berkley Lightning (not the Shock). I'm sure there are others. 2 Quote

I'm sure there are others. Pflueger's site has a sale on the Trions right now. $34 for the reel. I'm liking my Trion, it seems to be very well built. http://www.pfluegerfishing.com/pflueger-reels-spinning-reels/pflueger-trion-spinning-reel/1313958.html#start=4 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 5, 2019 Super User Posted September 5, 2019 $40 for the rod, $30 for the reel = $70 for a combo. I bought a Lew's Xfinity combo for $56 from Walmart this summer for creek wading and fishing. I am surprised how much I like this combo. I have other spinning combos that are a lot more expensive but I seem to bring this one with me every trip. It's very light for a medium set-up. Reel: 8 bearing drive, fat aluminum bail wire, Winn grip knob. Rod IM7 with a winn grip handle. 2 Quote
Joe_w1234 Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 At that point with such a small budget, most rods will be generally equal in terms of sensitivity, etc. it’s at or above that $100 mark where some start to stand out 1 Quote
govallis Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Shimano Sienna twists line and causes bird nest a lot. Get a Safina Pro SPa-35 instead, if you don't want a new fisherman be frustrated with endless bird nests. Note: not the SPa-25 that still bird nests. Go to Walmart and get both Shakespeare Excursion and Micro for less than $40 total and get all species and lures covered. With the extra dollars left, buy a bag of Eagle Claw 4/0 hooks for $2.50 and couple bags of Creme senko for $1/ea. 1 Quote
BroIncarnate Posted September 10, 2019 Author Posted September 10, 2019 Hey guys!! We got him the 7ft Medium Berkley Lightning rod with a size 2500 Shimano Nexave-- this academy was limited and we didn't feel like driving around, hah. Thanks so much, he is super stoked and he already caught his first bass! (see attached) He's been doing nothing but watching fishing videos lol! We are going out again this weekend. Thanks again! 2 Quote
