clemsondds Posted August 31, 2019 Posted August 31, 2019 I've got 3 baitcaster rods right now and 2 spinning rods. One of my spinning rods is really for ICW fishing...so a little heavy. Trying to decide if I should just replace the spinning rod and get a nicer combo, or add another casting rod, or both lol. I've got a mixture of brands: Shimano SLX DC, SCurado K, and Shimano SLX casting, and Shimano stradic Ci4 for spinning. Rods are Dobyns glass, lews TP1 and st croix avid. St croix mojo for spinning rod. How do you roll? Quote
j bab Posted August 31, 2019 Posted August 31, 2019 90% of my rods are casting So if I were you I'd definitely get a casting rig. Since it sounds like you have the basics covered and some money to spend, you could splurge and get a high end combo instead of two in your normal price range. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted August 31, 2019 Super User Posted August 31, 2019 I definitely use casting setups way more than spinning. We are similar. Rods and reels from all over with Daiwa reels being in the majority. Daiwa, Fenwick & Falcon lead in rods. About 82% of mine are baitcasting, but they get used about 99.3% of the time. 1 Quote
clemsondds Posted August 31, 2019 Author Posted August 31, 2019 Wow those are some nice setups!! Looks like I’ll need to be adding both ha. So how many spinning rods do you take? I think I would like one rigged with a dropshot and one with either shakyhead or wacky rig. My other rod to add will probably be a flipping/frog rod. I assume I’ll try to find a 7’3 H. Thanks again and love seeing the variety Quote

Super User Jig Man Posted August 31, 2019 Super User Posted August 31, 2019 Most of the time i carry 10 bait casters and 7 spinning setups. All of my reels are Shimanos. My bait caster setups vary from Ned to Arigs. The majority of the rods are Gloomis. The 3 of the spinning setups are for plastics and 4 of them are Ned rigs. In the winter I swap out the Ned for vertical setups. Those have Fenwick HMG rods. I found a rod mfg company that lets me buy at great prices so I have quit buying branded rods. Quote

fin Posted August 31, 2019 Posted August 31, 2019 I'd kind of like to see how much some of these collections are worth, because it might make me feel better about how much money I don't spend on fishing. 2 Quote

I couldn't tell you. My cheapest rod cost $17 plus tax. Most expensive $175. Cheapest reel $30, most expensive i think was $240. However, my Airy Red has the most invested in it. It was unusable upon delivery. Repair, cleaning and upgrades cost more than the reel's purchase price. Let's just say that over the past 10 plus years I have managed to accumulate a few thousand in rods and reels. Quote

Yeah, I imagine most people don't really want to know how much they've spent. I know I don't. I keep all my fishing stuff receipts, well most of it, in one place, but I've never once considered totaling the receipts. Quote

Thanks Only a few rods were purchased with a specific technique in mind. The OG 7'4" Tatula was purchased as a frog rod and stays in Florida. So does the Hurricane and is used for treble hook lures. The Toadface is for frogs and toads locally, but is much more versatile that that. The Aetos, X10 and 704 CB Glass naturally are used for treble hook lures. As will be a Lew's Crankbait Ledge rod still in plastic. The Benkei was purchased for my dedicated Ned Rig rod. The HMG is one on the rods I learned to cast 3/16 oz. Shad Raps on. Still use it for that, but it will also do more. The 105H makes a good companion for it and were purchased together. I've never used a Carolina Rig, Umbrella Rig or punched. I don't use large swimbaits. I do user smaller ones. I never figured I'd be buying so much gear so I always bought with versatility in mind. Technique rods (including crankbait rods) are some of the last rods I have purchased. I decided to try a baitcast reel when I got back into fishing in 2009. Love them. Have too many. Would have more, but am trying to be more responsible. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 31, 2019 Super User Posted August 31, 2019 Lew’s Mach 1 baitcaster combo Lew’s Mach 2 baitcaster combo Lew’s Mach Crush baitcaster combo Lew’s LFS baitcaster, Field and Stream Tec Spec Elite MH rod Lew’s Tournament MB baitcaster, Denali Zenyx crankbait rod Lew’s Mach 2 spinning combo Lew’s Mach Crush spinning combo Lew’s Xfinity spinning combo Lew’s Custom Pro Speed Spin, Favorite Balance ML rod I usually roll with a spinning combo for finesse fishing and a baitcaster combo for power fishing from the bank. Same for kayak. If I am on a boat I will take 3 baitcasters and a spinning combo with me. If I am creek or canal fishing it is usually a spinning combo I carry. Quote
clemsondds Posted August 31, 2019 Author Posted August 31, 2019 I find I want more rod/reel combos just so I don’t have to swap out baits so often when I’m out on the water. I usually have a limited time going out so it’s nice I can have my docs and baits ready the night before. I’ve been night fishing more lately and spinning rods are nice bc can’t see where lure is and so less chance of backlash. When you are skipping a lure under cover or dock, do you use spinning or bait caster? I am guessing most use baitcadtrr but I have tried it lately and keep getting backlash if I do t hit it correctly. Spinning real seams easier. I know it’s my fault though and just need to work on my technique. Two questions on gear. If going with two spinning rods, what flex do you go for on each? Second, if you were going to try to have one rod to do frog, pitching and flipping...what would the specifics you would want (eg length, power,..). Thanks and let’s keep hearing your rods. Love seeing all the cool brands i haven’t heard of Quote

I think that the next rig you buy you should get the best you can afford to afford. I'm not saying go get it tomorrow. I am saying that if you can afford to own a $1000 rig, buy it! If it takes a year to save up, so be it. You have plenty of gear to get you by until then. You will be much happier in the end and not always coming back here asking which rig you should sell to sidestep Into another "doable" rig. 1 Quote

Yeh, I'm not looking to sell any rigs to buy another one. Money isn't really an issue. I'm just looking to pick up another (or two) combos...just trying to think it through. I am actually really happy with my current combos (excluding the one spinning setup). I'm no professional so I doubt I could tell a huge difference between a nice $400-500 combo vs a $1000 setup, so I'll probably just stick with a good middle of the range rig $150-250 rod and same reel). To me, I would rather just grab a different rod real quick if I get a short strike, and want to follow it up with something different instead of stopping and tying on a different bait. Obviously, I'm not going to be happy throwing an ugly stick just in order to have another rod...but if I can do it with a st croix, dobyns, or megabass. And I figure, if I am going to buy another, might as well get a rod that fills a gap in my setup. At this point in my life, I would feel kindof dumb having $5k-7k in rods, when I'm only fishing a couple times a month. I'm still somewhat new to fishing, but am really loving it. Now if I could just get my wife more on board lol Quote
