I am buying a new reel.  I have a Tatula CT that I like and was planning on buying another one.  While looking for one on Ebay I came across a Tatula CT type R for $20 more, making the type R the same price as the regular CT is at Tackle Warehouse.  What is the difference?  Has anybody used both?  If so which would you recommend.  Thanks in advance.

I have both - the type r has better bearings and some accent color

Do you notice any difference in casting distance, smoothness, or any other performance feature worth the extra $20?

No.  Although in the right hands the Type R might do a smidgen better with light baits.  Not in mine, tho.

I have 4 regular tatulas and 4 type R's.  Overall the casting is pretty much the same.  Its probably mental but I feel the type R's are smoother when reeling.

The smoothness isn't imagined,  IMO.  Additionally,  the Type Rs seem to go longer without feeling like they need service.

I had 5 tatulas and the type r was definitely the geary reel of the group and the first to go. Within hours of selling 3 of the originals I ordered another ct, elite and still have an sv. Great reels!

Type R are a better reel. BUT both are great reels. IMO the new Tatula 150 is another to try. I like it the most of all three.

I bought the standard Tat. CT.  for $99, will take the extra $30 and add it to the cost of a new rod.  Bait Monkey wont let me keep the savings.

I own Tatula CTs, CT-Rs, an SV, and Fuego CTs.  I can tell you that unless you just like the way one looks over the other you only need to buy either a Fuego CT or a Tatula SV.  The reels in between are just for lookin' at.  I don't regret buying any of mine, though.  I have inadvertently become a Daiwa fan.  The only thing I regret is not buying a big pile of Tatula SVs when I bought mine new for $130.

Money well spent. A better rod makes a lot more difference in bite detection and the lighter it is the less fatigue.

Very true, and something that newer anglers first getting into buying gear don’t realize, including me before I tried a decent rod.

The CT type R has a lighter spool, higher quality spool bearings (2) and a Zaion drag star.  The type R is about .6 ounce lighter.  The 2018-19 Tatula 100 is a better performing reel the the CT or CT Type R.

I like reels with red trim, but dislike the looks of the CT Type R.  Much prefer the looks of the original Type R.  The Limited Edition (original Type R) is beautiful.  :teeth:

Same, I ended up with all Daiwa reels pretty quickly because I could find the Tatulas on sale so frequently I just started replacing all my old starter reels as they crapped out. I bought the Type R 8 speed for my frog setup and had a bearing crap out on me pretty quick. Other than that it's been nice, although I do feel like the brakes behave differently than my Tatula CTs. I got a Fuego recently and honestly will probably stick with those over the CTs or Type Rs, put more money into the rod. Although I suspect my next reel will be a Shimano just to spice things up.

Yeah Iike the way the old Tat Type R looks.  It is in the spirit of the older Daiwa platforms with the mill pattern on the top of the frame and red trim on metallic gloss black paint.  The mill pattern is strongly related to the TD-Z Type R, PX Type R and Zillion Type R.  I don't care for the aesthetics of the Tat CT Type R at all.  Of all the CT Tatulas the Fuego CT has one of the best mill patterns and paint IMO although I do really like gold and black market specific Tatula CT CS reels.

I need to find a CS and an old gold and black Tatula rod just to have that pairing before the rods and reels completely dissapear.

Hot dog!  This would be another good reason to buy a few more reels.  BUT the yellow on my OG Tatulas is now more towards a copper color from age.  What can I use to polish them (in hopes of returning them to yellow)?
