DanielG Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 So, this morning... I had been using my new bait casting setup exclusively for awhile, a Curado DC and a Dobyns 735 glass. But, the past couple of weeks the bites have been nearly nill so I decide to also bring my spinning outfit and maybe do some finesse fishing with jigs. I trolled a trusted path with my casting rod to a weeded area (no bites) where I was going to do some wacky worms and maybe a texas rig. I propped my casting rig up against the console, loaded a wacky hook and worm on my spinning rig and did some spin casting and slow jiggy retrieves. On one cast I went waaay back and bombed the worm out there.... But, the hook grabbed the middle grommet of my casting rod and I saw it sail over my head like a well thrown javeline and land in the water in a fairly long cast considering the lure I had just thrown. After the initial shock I began repeating to myself... "stay hooked, stay hooked". Luckily it did and I reeled it in. I opened up the reel and it didn't seem wet inside. I'll keep a check on it for awhile to make sure it's alright. And I left it in the sun for awhile. So, that's my new lure story. Happened this morning. Afterwards I thought, "I was ready to dive for it if I had to", but then I thought, "I was also wearing an auto inflate vest"... That would have added to the absurdity of the situation. I'll bet this doesn't happen to many people. Why me? Quote

I caught one of my favored rods from the kayak rodholder behind my seat with a mighty squarebill-backswing just a few weeks ago ...sent the combo only a couple feet, however. Mine didn't stay hooked....I somehow managed to reach out and grab the butt as it was diving below the surface Quote

Did you manage to reel it in or did you lose the rod? I can't imagine losing a rig to an reason like this. I have a spinning rig and now a casting rig. I don't really plan on having the half dozen or dozen setups like some people. I will be much more careful. Thinking of adding some sort of vertical standup to boat as laying it down isn't a viable option for me. Quote

I built this rack from some MDF and 2" PVC - took about an hour not including paint-drying time. Quote

I'll bet this doesn't happen to many people. Why me? Happened to me on my double secret pond. Was in my small raft with four or five rods and when I made a cast and my crankbait hook caught one of my favorite rod and reel and over she went. Water was 20+ feet so there was no way I could dive for it. It is still there, at the bottom of my double secret pond. Quote

My buddy threw one of mine in that way in the middle of the night in lake fork.... Didn't bother swimming for that one, gone - er. Jumped in an rescued them most other times. Vertical rod holders are a nightmare for me. My buddies put their rods in their first thing when they jump in my boat against my advice. Then they hook them on back cast or saw them in half with side arm cast. They don't fly out of the holder but it's always something Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted August 23, 2019 Super User Posted August 23, 2019 My Dual console Javelin has three holes in the passenger side console for the passenger to stick the butt of their rods to store if they want, which my dad often did. That is until one day when he did it, the release on his Curado got pressed. The Carolina rigged worm with 3/4oz weight (which happened to be tied onto 50lb braid) managed to get off the back of the boat while I was cruising at 50mph. There was a sudden noise and he managed to look just in time to see his rod and reel go flying out the back of the boat in about 40 feet of water. I quickly dropped a marker where the rod went in the water. I made a grapple with a 1" pipe nipple and heavy steel wire when we got home and the next day we were lucky enough to catch the line and retrieve it. It had a full spool and being braid stretched out across the bottom, I figured we had a pretty good chance of catching it and getting it back. Quote

I wasn't so lucky this year and my former favorite top water rod is probably a foot deep in soft mud...on the bright side it gave me an excuse to upgrade to a Daiwa Elite Signature series rod...hate when that happens! ? NathanDLTH Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 Two years ago, bank fishing for smallies and was throwing a squarebill. Went back to cast, backlashed and to add insult to injury broke a rod... I was not happy. Quote
