billmac Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 I mean, which style will adequately perform the same role of some other types of jigs? After all, they are all little hunks of lead with hooks attached. Does a ball head jig actually do anything that a swim jig can't do? I won't be getting a Christmas cards from tackle companies, but I think we're being taken for a bit of a ride here. Quote

You can use pretty much any of the jigs however you want but a football jig works better through rocks and a swim jig swims better through vegetation. So really just get what you like and works on your bodies of water. Unless you are buying tungsten jigs they arent that expensive anyway. Quote
LonnieP Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 The Arkie style head is the most versatile jig. 1 Quote
billmac Posted August 21, 2019 Author Posted August 21, 2019 Looks like Arkie makes all kinds of jig head styles. Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 21, 2019 Super User Posted August 21, 2019 Read the post last Sunday "Jigs" so I don't need to repeat myself. I will add that grass jigs by definition have the hook eye located at the nose or front of the jig head to help slide through grass types of cover without gatherings excessive amount of weeds on the jig head. Anytime the jig haed design adds lead behind the hook eye the back end of the jig head gets closer to the hook point. Todays jigs try to solve the short compact jig design closing off the hook point during the strike by using wider gap hooks. Wider gap hooks require heavier wire so they don't bend open. Heavy wire hooks require stronger line and rods to get a good hook set. Simply put there isn't a panacea in jig design. Most versitile design may be the Arkie head design, see Siebert Outdoors.
