Tie direct with San Diego Jam knot, loop knots can break, snaps add unwanted weight and I don't tie to split rings.

I always tie those baits direct. Most baits direct for that matter.

Pop-R's I tie direct, all walking baits a Tactical Anglers clip. The strongest easiest to use snap out there. I always remove all the line tie split rings too.940854389_ScreenShot2019-08-21at2_44_00PM.png.ac92702e247cf6f98ed1a532e58ccd65.png

I've been using the 25lb Power Clips with good success. I throw spooks and poppers on the same rod, so I'm switching between poppers (sizes, rattle sound, color) and spooks a lot. I remove the split rings on the lures and sometimes the hooks. I always check the line after a catch though.

Clips on walking baits, including the light weight Owner Hyper Weld, allow the line to drop down and snag the front treble hook. When I tie direct snagging the hook with my line doesn't happen. It's frustrating to make a cast at the boil only to fowl hook the line.

Tie direct on both and fish them on straight braid.

I've fished both type baits for decades and have always been interested in how other anglers fasten line to spooks and poppers and there is no "right" way. Many accomplished spook tossers tie direct, many use split rings and many use snaps - same goes for poppers. The longer you fish the more you find success/comfort in certain details - if it works for you keep it up. If you are seeking to learn, find the way you are most comfortable/confident with - myself I will use different ties for different lure behavior.

It's bass fishing which means try anything and everything until you find your own preference.

Exactly. This site has a lot of "don't do it the wrong way". If you have a way that works keep it.

I will tie directly to a pop-r, and I use a snap on spooks.

Oval rings on walking baits, direct tie on popping baits. Always on mono.

Lol...I should have clarified, I sometimes change them out if they're cheap and easily bent. :D

I am not sure there is a "Right" answer as lots of people have success using a loop knot, tying direct without a split ring, adding a split ring, or using a small but strong snap if you are the type to often change out lures and colors, size etc.

I tie direct to my Pop'rs. and rarely tie a loop knot. I have never noticed a difference personally.

for spooks, I usually add an oval split ring to them or will use a snap. I was always against using extra hardware like snaps for lures, but I am not sure it matters since usually they are always moving and fish do not get a detailed look where I fish. I never tie a snap to a split ring though, although some people do it to create sound with silent spooks-the older ones were silent.

End of the day, just make sure you have good line, good knot, and if a split ring or snap, spend the extra money to buy the better quality ones. There is huge difference in quality between the .99 pack of 10, and brands premium brands. The saltwater versions and brands like Tsunami and others we never see in the bass world are actually good because they make small version rated high.
