do any of you guys use the walmart spinner baits that are $1? Thats all I use, since others are 3 or 4 dollars. Is there much of a difference in the walmart brand and lets say strike king?

IMO strike king makes the absolute best spinnerbait.  Hands down.  However, there never going to be a dollar.  I've heard people say all they use is the 1.00 wal-mart baits so they must like them.  If thats what you can afford or thats what you like keep chunking them.  They'll catch fish.  When you can afford more expensive ones you can see which ones you like.

ideally, a spinner-bait is a spinner-bait. No matter if it is $1.00 or $5.00 (my favorite BOOYAHs). What I like to do is buy the $1.00 spinner-bait and then make my own skirt for it and in any way possible, make it better. The difference is the wire used (I believe), cheap spinner-baits have weaker wires (not stainless steel) than branded ones. Another thing is the skirt and paint job.

In my opinion I would suggest $1 spinner-baits for starters. Another good thing about $1 spinner-baits is if you loose it, you don't feel bad. However if you loose the $5 spinner-bait (I've done this before!!) you get frustrated! (I do!  ;D)

IMO, a spinner-bait is a spinner-bait, it will catch fish no matter how expensive or cheap!  :o

The only real difference that i noticed when ever i used one was the quality.  After 3 fish it was pretty much useless.  Personally i would spend the extra bucks on a booyah or a strike king so that i could use it over and over.  But thats just me.

ive got a couple of the $1 spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. the spinnerbaits are fine but my buzzbait fell apart becore i could even fish it. the o-ring was dry rotted and the skirt came apart. maybe i just got a bad one but if you can find a "nice" one, then buy them...i would!

This topic points out the reality of how marketing sells baits and tackle.

The bass could care less about the price or wire strength or skirts.  The bass are looking for a nice meal and if it is a $1.00 or $8.00 bait they could care less.

I have thrown those $1.00 Wal-Mart specials and those beautiful Stike Kings (my favorites, too) and have caught fish on both.

The major difference is that that $1.00 specials get torn up faster.

I will keep throwing the higher priced models because I have more faith and confidence in them.

A few years ago my wife thought she was doing me a favor. She was walking through Miejer and saw a display with $1.00 spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. She bought a few of each, and on our next trip out I used one of the spinnerbaits so I didn't hurt her feelings. As luck would have it, I hooked a four pound smallie, when we got it in the net the spinnerbait was so out of shape there was no saving it.

I'll stick with my Terminators, they hold up much better.

Some one said in a earlier post that spinnerbaits are spinnerbaits and that is true to a point. I have fished the 1.00 spinnerbaits and I had a hard time keeping them tuned and it seemed once you caught a decent sized fish on one it was so bent out of shap that it couldnt be tuned back up to work straight. I feel the couple more dollars for a decent spinner bait is worth the time wasted tuning and straightening out the cheaper spinnerbaits.

alright I saw this topic yesterday and was walking through wal-mart (not on a fishing gear buying trip mind you) and thought about this thread.  I almost soley use strike kings, but probably have 3-4 that arent SK.  Anyway, because of the thread i made my way to the fishing section and picked up a 1.00 spinner (and somehow ended up spending 19 more dollars on fishing gear, bait monkey...) and to be honest, as alot of others said, compared to the more expensive brands, it seems to be very cheaply made and does not like it will stand up to more than a few fish... Once i fish it, I will let you know how it goes.

Reguardless if you catch a bass on a branded spinner-bait or a cheap $1 one, you still need to make sure the shaft is straight. Even a big bass will knock the shaft out of line. Otherwise you will find that your spinner-bait is tracking either to the left or right.

God bless  8-)

I'm with Paleo, I use both but seem to catch more on the $1 becaause I throw it more often.  Have had no problems with bent wires, broken hooks or bad skirts.

The only problem I have with the $1 Wal-Mart spinner baits is that the wire frame tends to bend easier, and become flexible under heavy use.  After 10 casts the wire starts to get a little flimsy, and I have problems with the spoons clattering against the hook body.  Most of the time there is a reason you only pay a budget price for a bait, and that's because they use materials that aren't as expensive or durable as the more expensive lures.  Like I said, that's the only thing I don't like about them.    I like to retrieve my spinner baits with a fast action most of the time, and I'm hard on them.  That's why I invest in more expensive tackle.

I saw this thread and got me thinking. I see the Walmart displays and keep walking. I throw allot of spinner bait I mainly throw Stanely and Terminator spinnerbaits exclusively. I have had my fill with the cheaper wire baits. The titanium wire has plenty of action to it and will rarely break during a fight. I will spend the few extra bucks ($6-$9) on a bait knowing that its going to last longer. I mean after how many fish do you need to tie on a new bait and pitch the other? If like others have said after 3 fish the Spinnerbait is in tough shape. It doesnt take much to figure out that getting a premium bait will last longer, and will cost less in the long run. Atleast thats my opinion anyway.

The spinnerbaits arent bad, but i dont really care for the buzzbaits.  You have to fish them way to fast to keep them on the surface.

i belive john is quite correct however i do use the walmart spinnerbaits for situations where i may lose one that i may not throw a 5 dollar spinner bait in and i catch plenty of good fish. but i also use strike kings spinner baits and the booyah's it depends on where im fishing, what cover is available and what structure im casting into and so on.
