Pitch black mornings. Waking up before dawn. Long drives to the water. Always worth it. Hobie Fishing

Was planning on hitting the local shallow river yesterday morning at sunrise. That didn't happen but we did get out on the water around 7AM. Just beautiful. No place I'd rather be.

I've been out on my kayak more than my boat this season. I've really gotten hooked on how peaceful it is on some of these smaller waters, particularly early mornings.

I love being on the water when I still need my headlamp to unkook a bass for the first half hour.

If I'm not on the water at dawn, it's because I didn't leave the house.

I got up at 3:30 Saturday morning so I could drive an hour and a half for a tourney.  It's the only time I can justify waking up so early.

I love being the first one on the ramp at O'dark thirty, and this morning it really was dark at 5AM. Needed the headlamp, and the lights on the back of the truck cab. Usually up by 3, so I can have that leisurely cup of caffeine and double check the trailer, the yak, and the rods I want for the day...on the road by 4:30 -4:45

After getting to the ramp and setting up...first light is on the water

I fish late afternoons in the hot summers here on Lake Athens in Texas. Almost too hot for this about now each year but September is coming and it'll begin to get a wee bit cooler. But, the daylight hours are shorter, can't stay out until 8:30 PM and later and still have plenty of fading light.

But, oh, how I used to love to get up early and go to Wheeler Branch about an hour away from where I lived, get there in the dark and wait for the park to open up, then be on the water at or just before sunrise.

The drives down in the dark, the empty roads . . . the anticipation!

It's always amazing to me though how fast those early mornings go by. I was on the water this past Saturday a little after 6 and before I knew it, it was 9am.
