Randy Price Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 I'm torn between an AVIX X 66 MF vs a AVID 66 MHF for a versatile spinning rod. What would you guys choose? Quote
Super User islandbass Posted August 16, 2019 Super User Posted August 16, 2019 Bait monkey answer: get both! If SC has 7’ versions, I’d choose them instead. Quote
SirWoogie Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 I use an Avid X 68 MF. That's my favorite all-around spinner. It all comes down to personal preference. Ideally fish them both and return what you don't like (if that is an option for you). Quote

Super User islandbass Posted August 16, 2019 Super User Posted August 16, 2019 I’m in the same boat but have chosen to employ 2-piece rods for the trunk for the “just be ready to fish” if the opportunity should arise. My true bass rods might see action on a weekend. It’s a bit tricky but I can barely fit my 7’ rods with the back seat down. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted August 16, 2019 Super User Posted August 16, 2019 I don’t know which lures you prefer to use, how you fish or what other gear you already have. Hard to help you choose without more information. I fish river smallmouth more than anything else so FOR ME, I’d pick the medium action. 1 Quote
zell_pop1 Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 If you can only have 1, I would get the MH and have more backbone to get em out of cover. Quote
Allen Der Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 Unless you don't know how to use a bait caster, the medium is the best option. My St Croix Premier 66mf are great all around rods Quote
Super User MickD Posted August 17, 2019 Super User Posted August 17, 2019 It is my opinion that the MF is much more versatile than the MHF. But it depends on what you fish most of the time. I fish tubes, small cranks, wacky rig, a little surface, 4 in swim baits, soft jerks. If you like to snap 3.5-4 in swim baits off the bottom a MHF may not give you a good action to the swim bait. The rod needs to flex significantly in the jerk to get the right acceleration of the lure. And taking up the slack with a rod that's too stiff just doesn't feel right for some reason. The difference is more or fewer fish with this technique. 1 Quote
Derek1 Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 I think a 6’6” medium fast spinning is the most versatile rod there is. 1 Quote
greentrout Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 6'6" MF spinning rod ...for finesse ... have spinning rods rated for 4lb. test and 1/8 oz. lures ...and light t rigging ... baitcaster all else ... good fishing ... Quote
Yumeya Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 Out of the two I would go with the Medium. But if I could pick one from St-Croix it would be a 7'6" ML Legend Elite Quote
Brad Reid Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 No doubt in my mind that M is better and has wider applications than a MH for spinning rods. Even a ML is a very fine choice and I'd likely prefer it over the MH. I'd choose the exact opposite for casting rods where MH would be my choice over an M or ML. I caught two just under 25" LMBs several weeks ago now, about 50 yards apart, 30 minutes apart. The first was a veritable bull and I was using my favorite kayak rod, a 5'6" MF, as it is intended to be used and it worked great. Intended? Yes, where the rod fights the fish, not the reel, then as you are able to pull the rod tip high, you reel down on the line to take it up. I try to never reel against line being "dragged" off my spool. The second big bass was lazier, came in much easier but I had to be careful as I was fishing in thick pads. So, control was the issue, turning its head by swinging my rod around. Rod length? On spinning rods, go as short as you can get away with for the intended length of casts you will be making. If you are fishing finesse, say from a kayak or canoe as I often do, and my finesse casts are rarely more than a 100 feet, and a 7 footer is just a waste of length. A shorter rod will give you much better leverage. A 6'6" MF would be hard to beat. Very versatile!!! Brad 1 Quote

Timberwolf530 Posted August 19, 2019 Posted August 19, 2019 I have both an Avid 6'6" MHF & a 7' MF. I use the MH mostly for flukes & smaller jigs. I've used the M for everything from tubes, to shaky heads, to shad raps, to wacky & Neko rigs. You could even use it for drop shots and Ned Rigs if you needed to. It depends on what you want to use if for, but I find I use the M much more than the MH. For the most part, I find if I need a MH, I'm usually using a casing outfit. I agree with the earlier comment that if I could only have one, it would be the M. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 19, 2019 Super User Posted August 19, 2019 My nicest and most expensive rod (MSRP, not my cost) is a MH spinning rod. It just sits as I much prefer baitcast gear for any lure that this rod would be used for. My vote would be for the MF spinning rod. Like said elsewhere, if it was a baitcast rod, then I would opt for the MH. Quote
