Black Hawk Basser Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 When I bring along a net, have my pliers at-the-ready in my pocket, or have my phone camera ready for a picture, I inevitably don't catch squat. It's like punishment from the fishing Gods for being presumptuous. 2 2 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted August 11, 2019 Global Moderator Posted August 11, 2019 Always start with a frog NO Bananas...ever No fish on first cast Mike Quote
Sphynx Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 I have a superstitious belief, a dry line is bad luck... Seriously though, I do wear my fishing shirt/hat/sunshield as appropriate for the weather, but that's why I bought them, so I'm not sure it counts. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 11, 2019 Super User Posted August 11, 2019 I'm not superstitious at all except when the owls start hooting . Ir seems to me that whenever the owls start hooting fishing picks up even if its in the middle of a bright sunny day . Quote
Jaderose Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 I do have a lucky hat that I always wear fishing and have gone back for it if I forget it. (Happened once). I think it's held together with sweat and slime at this point. I'm guessing it will require a burial at sea next season. I gotta figure out how to transfer it's mojo to a new hat. It is actually disconcerting to me that it is on it's last legs, which I know is silly but still...... 4 hours ago, Pickle_Power said: When I bring along a net, have my pliers at-the-ready in my pocket, or have my phone camera ready for a picture, I inevitably don't catch squat. It's like punishment from the fishing Gods for being presumptuous. I have one like this. I always use an anti-slip glove on my left hand because my grip strength is not great from some nerve damage and because I don't want to submit a fish to sunscreen. I NEVER put it on when I first go out. It doesn't go on until the first fish is in the boat. 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 11, 2019 Super User Posted August 11, 2019 And one I just thought about: I do not want to catch a bass on my first cast of the day. If so, it will bring me bad luck for the rest of the day. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 11, 2019 Super User Posted August 11, 2019 Regarding first cast catch. Had one on Thursday. Very next cast, right into a tree, LOL. And to be honest, I did think of the "bad omen" thing. Fortunately I was able to catch several more fish that outing 1 Quote
VinnyR Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 I'm a data analyst so I apply historical probabilities every day and my whole life is based on statistics and science. And even I'm a little superstitious. No bananas, don't bring a cooler (saltwater), never say "seven" at the craps table, etc. Deep down I know it's crap but it's kinda fun to go along with it 3 1 Quote
SeaCrow Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 I've heard alot about bananas not being taken on boats, but i don't know the story behind it. I learned a few more from y'all Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted August 11, 2019 Super User Posted August 11, 2019 Not superstitious. But I wear a lucky green thong backwards and inside out. Started as a convenience of one less layer to relieve myself during the colder months but it brought the luck year round. I begin wearing it many years and 120 lbs ago. My fishing partners not crazy about during the summer and it's a bit tight at this point . Hasn't seemed to work in a while. Thinking I'll just start wearing my normal briefs while fishing. If y'all have folks encroaching on you while fishing a thong worn backwards inside out seems to dissuade them. Give it a try.? 4 Quote

Super User FishTank Posted August 11, 2019 Super User Posted August 11, 2019 Am superstitious when comes to fishing? ...... A little. When I was a kid (1970s) my dad and his fishing buddies had some weird ones..... they were convinced that when the fishing sucked that there was an Omen in the lake that kept them from catching fish, my dad had a lucky hat and a lucky rod and in general any rod that was white was just plain bad luck. The only thing that I still go with is the lucky hat and I sort of believe in the white rod theory. Quote
keagbassr Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 I usually spend the first 5-6weeks of the season tracking which hat and or shirt I'm wearing when I have a good or bad day to see if any have some good 'mojo'. Also back before smartphones when I had a camera on a tripod i like @Pickle_Power would never catch anything if I had it at the ready. Was always fun trying to set it up with one hand while holding a bass in the other. Quote

Chowderhead Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Not at all - don’t like bananas and always happy to catch a fish on the first cast. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted August 12, 2019 Super User Posted August 12, 2019 I'm not superstitious, but I'll bet that there is someone (or a few?) here that: -Don't fill the livewell before they've caught a fish -Don't get the scale and/or measuring board out before they've caught a fish -Don't make a meaningful first cast -I've talked to a number of guys that claim not to be superstitious, but wouldn't have a banana in the boat -More than a couple talk to or kiss one of the early catches of the day Quote

Randy Price Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 I have a St. Croix Mojo Bass with a Daiwa Revos reel that I think is lucky. For some unexplained reason I catch more bass with it than my much more expensive Legend Xtreme with a Stradic Ci4+ reel. Quote

The trick is to get a real Mojo hand, as there are very very few around, but I've said too much. Now I gotta go find a vela and a panuelo de seda, or maybe I'll just go rabbitt hunting and amputate him at the knees. Folks are going to believe, what folks are going to believe, it's all valid, and it's all not, just depends on one's perspective. Now where did I leave my Tarrot deck, oh yeah, on the pew... Quote
