Semi new to bass fishing and "The Frog". Huge lake with bass nearby and tired of waiting for salmon/steelhead season.

I have an older lamiglas excel that is ok but looking to buy another rod more suited for soft bodied frogs.

Dobyns Fury fr 735?

Gave it a try this evening- Chronarch MGL with 30# ultra 8 casts like a dream. Zillion HD with PP 50# cast like a turd.

What are you asking?

Casting differences between the two lines?

If so, talk to me. How heavy is the frog?

Is your reel set properly and not overbraked? I would also look at spool tension too, if it’s overly tight you’ll loose distance same with overbreaking.

A Zillion HD should do just fine casting along with the Chronarch which makes me wonder if it’s not user error.

I fish Daiwa and Shimano reels exclusively and unless the brakes are set super high or Ive tightened up the spool tension via the cast control knob that’s the only way my casts are short. The third option is the weight of the lure. Most frogs are 1/2-7/8oz and that shouldn’t be a problem for either of those reels.

I have a FR 735C very happy with it using with KK Speed demon and 50# braid with a mono backing. Works well for me.

I use an AvidX H/Fast paired up with a Lew's Super Duty Speed Spool and love it.

I have & use a Dobyns Champion XP DC735c & DC736c These are both excellent rods for frogging. You did not mention budget but I see where you ask about the Fury 735. I do not have this rod but the reviews are very good So I bet you cant go wrong.

Your post reads like you already have the Fury 735.  No experience with one, but from what I read on this board, that will make a fine frog rod.  As far as your experience with the reels are concerned I am a bit surprised.  No experience with an MGL reel, but from what I have read they are excellent casters.  But so are Zillions.

I have 9 Shimano reels and quite a few more than that Daiwas.  As a general rule I don't see a lot of difference in casting distance among the brands.  Two Shimanos are older Chronarchs.  Two Daiwas are OG Zillions.  Both the 100B and 50th Anniversary...in particular...are excellent distance casters.  I would hope the newer models should at least be equal performers.  Given the hype on the MGL reels, they should be better than my older reels.  Not enough to make the HD seem like a turd, tho.

Although I don't have an HD I'd venture a guess that either the brakes and/or spool tension are too tight or there is a problem with the reel.

EDIT:  Lighter line will give a bit more distance.  Speaking of line weight, I personally feel 30# is a bit light.  Not because of its breaking strength, but because it would be more apt to dig in under the loads that can sometimes occur while frogging.

No sense in spending a bunch of cash for a frog rod. Heavy power and fast tip to work the frog and pull it out of heavy cover. The fury 735 will do fine. I use the champion 736 and love it.

I'm also in the cheap frog rod camp. I use a 7'3" Lew's Carbon fire heavy fast that I got for all of 39.99.

The rod I use for frogs is also on the 'budget' side. Daiwa Aird-X H/F...tosses small and medium frogs well and cost me all of $48.
