Super User WRB Posted August 11, 2019 Super User Posted August 11, 2019 I believe it's a mind set. I have always used state of the art jig and worm bait casting rods. When NRX came out I ways interested until they added $100 cert for basic rod replacement warranty, making a $500 rod $600. I was not happy that Loomis was charging for rod replacements, that was before anyone else started doing that. So I had custom rods made that are equal to NRX at 1/2 the price. My point is thre rods are equal, the price was a bounce and I know the difference. I have fished with NRX 852 JWR several times and prefer mybMajor Craft rod spinning rods, lighter weight and good balance, regardless of the price difference. Tom Quote

I use lots of different brands of rods and IMO have never fished anything that is a more sensitive rod then a NRX, it is what all others are compared to. I agree with using spinning rods for light tackle, I do it, but I also use high end spinning rods and love it. What spinning rods do you use? 1 hour ago, WRB said: I believe it's a mind set. Tom I would say that you outfished your partner because you are a better angler, not because of the rods. The combos are really just for fun IMO, bass can be caught on an ugly stick. The biggest fish I’ve ever caught was a king salmon, on a9 weight ugly stick(sensitivity matters less for that type of fishing though IMO). What blanks did you have your custom casting rods built on? Also, I’m assuming you use that splash it model you mentioned earlier for topwater? Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 11, 2019 Super User Posted August 11, 2019 My custom jig and worm casting rods were made by ALX using Lamiglas state of the art rod blanks that are no longer available do to 3M nano composite resin being licensed. The state of the art rods are good today, NRX is superceded by Conquest for example, the materials are expensive pushing the highend over the counter rods over $600. My fishing partners were highly skilled tournament anglers, rods can only do so much. Spinning rods are less effective than bait casting because you have don't have the same contact with the line and it's the line that is attached to your lure, not the rod. Spinning rods cast lighter lure better then bait casting and that is where they excel. There are lots of very good choices available, select rods based on how they feel to you, not by price point or other recommendations. Tom Quote

NRX, Conquest and Megabass Destoryer spinning rods and casting rods are my favorite. The 842 blank is probably my favorite blank of all time in spinning and casting, but right now I absolutely love using the Megabass Flyssa spinning rod, its d**n fun to fish with. But there are a ton of good ones out there to choose from Kistler, Phenix, Daiwa and St-Croix are all excellent, I've just been using Gloomis for a long time now and while some of them aren't the nicest looking rods they work amazing, megabass on the other hand are just gorgeous and fish very very well. Its 7'6" but its not a noodle, I use it most as a ned rig rod but the action is very nice and it being a light action but feels more between a light action and medium light action the rod is a blast fighting big smallmouth. It also casts ligher weight baits a mile, I put a Daiwa Certate LT on the Flyssa and the balance is almost perfect. Quote
newyorktoiowa57 Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 If I was gonna go spinning(for a nicer rod then my sierra 692), it would probably be a 7M expride, GLX 842,or Orochi XX shaky head. 24 minutes ago, Yumeya said: Its 7'6" but its not a noodle, I use it most as a ned rig rod but the action is very nice and it being a light action but feels more between a light action and medium light action the rod is a blast fighting big smallmouth. Yumeya Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 I have the Orochi Whipsnake, is a awesome drop shot rod. But out of the 3 you listed I would take the 842 Quote
Mikeltee Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 I don't regret getting the tatula elite ags finesse casting rod. It throws everything I do on my spinning gear including neds, 1/4oz jigs, and 4" weightless senkos. It casts maybe 20% less than my spinning setup but I have never had an issue with not having enough distance. I like the spinning setup for skipping light baits and that is all I can say that it does better than the tatula rig. The BC gear is much more of a joy to use. I hate spinning. I say go for it. You have cash if you are talking nrx. If you find yourself needing a spinning setup get it next season... or sooner. Quote

I don’t have the cash rn as there are other upgrades I want to do to my lineup first, namely my frog rod. I don’t see that rod on TW, could you post a link? I agree about hating spinning gear lol. It takes a lot of the fun out of fishing for me. There is something about nicer equipment that makes fishing a lot more fun though. Quote
Mikeltee Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 I only succumbed to getting spinning because of peer pressure here. I posted a thread about it here and went from wanting the MB Whipsnake to getting the Alpha Angler wrench. I do not regret my decision. I think I paid around $250 on amazon for the tatula awhile ago. Here it is at full msrp. I'm sure a deal will come around. I just stole an ags 7'6" on amazon for $170. What sucks about the elites is that there are no reviews. The finesse is my favorite rod by far. I'm sure that will change when I get an nrx 894 next month. https://m.tackledirect.com/daiwa-tael701mmhxb-ags-tatula-elite-ags-rod.html Quote

I have seen a lot of BR members recommend it though. What do you throw in it? I was talking about a rod for shakey heads and ned rigs, maybe senkos. Something to replace a spinning rod. Quote

I agree that its M/MH rating seems high for finesse but its rating is true as far as 1/8 is concerned. It's mainly my standard 5" weightless senko rod but I also throw 4", 1/16 neds with regular trd, 1/8 drop shot, 1/4oz jigs, and anything else I feel is small enough as any reason I can get to fish it I do. Its super sensitive and I havent lost many fish with it. I use light wire hooks and dont bend them, but dont really need to set the hook too hard. They pretty much hook themselves unless it's a phantom bite. I also use the EWG superlines and have no issues with them either. I assure you that this rod is what you are looking for. It's the rod I got when I was thinking... I dont need spinning gear for these light presentations. I dont do vertical presentations as like you I am stuck on the bank for now. Quote

newyorktoiowa57 Posted August 12, 2019 Author Posted August 12, 2019 Another option would be the expride 72ML casting rod. Quote
Mikeltee Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 I dont like the tws. The first one I had I fell going down a steep bank to get to the river and it got a little sand it in and fried it. If you baby it it's great. I have a curado dc on my other tatula elite and it looks good too so I would imagine a curado K would look good. I havent thrown anything light on the K or the DC but I've read that they throw light weight just as good as the SV. I wont buy another TWS. Quote

freelancer27 Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 My personal thoughts/experience: I own a NRX852c and run it with a Steez CT SV (you can also run the Alpha CT SV) and 8 pound fluro. That combo cost me almost 1000 USD but if you combine it with the Alpha CT it is below 600 USD. For that money you can get a VERY nice spinning combo. As you, I am trying to get away from spinning where I can because it is just not as much fun to me. The combo is super light, well balanced and VERY sensitive! To add to this, the combo is capable of throwing 1/16oz jigs with tiny trailers about 15-20 yards (without much accuracy to be honest). With an 1/8oz lure the combo becomes very accurate. Also, I got the rod for 375 USD shipped for the NRX (it is not a 500 USD rod!). Quote

It is under $500 on digitaka though. The casting gear is just more fun, hard to describe but you seem to understand! The DX702 and 742 are also options. Quote

I also have the Steez sv tw and the later has a limit of 1/8 oz. The CT version is going far into the BFS domain for me. Yes, it is cheaper now. I paid a premium because I bought right when it came out. Quote

Fair enough. $487 on digitaka, about the same as the steez SV. Sounds like the steez CT would be the better choice for this application. Have you thrown ned rigs with that combo? Quote

It can also throw: * weightless plastics * Little poppers * 2.8 in keitechs * Little jerkbaits If you are on a 'budget' look at the Alpha CT SV instead of the Steez. A little bit heavier but basically same performance Quote
