Dave Davidson Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Hi fellas, First post here, what a great resource. I'm in need of some help, figured you guru's were the place to come. I need to order a worm Gear and Pawl for a round Abu reel but all the identifying stickers are gone. I suspect it's either a 4600 or 5600 series. According to the reel seat, it may even be a 6600, but I don't think it's that wide of a spool. I have a rather simple request for the owners of 4600, 5600, and 6600 owners. Do you mind relaying the inside width of the frame For instance my thumb bar measures 1-1/16" wide from frame to frame. I'm hoping this dimension will help me identify which Pawl and worm Geer item number I need to order. Quote
georgeyew Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 From the thumb bar measurement, it sounds like a 4600. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted August 8, 2019 Super User Posted August 8, 2019 Edit: I've replaced several pawls but never a worm gear. The pawl is made of softer material for that reason. Quote
Dave Davidson Posted August 8, 2019 Author Posted August 8, 2019 Thanks for the replies fellas! I think I figured it out. Looks like it's a "royal express". Same worm gear and pawl as all the 4000 series. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted August 8, 2019 Super User Posted August 8, 2019 I've had to change pawls often on the Abu C series, but never had to change out the worm gear... are you sure you need to change both. Order several of the pawls. oe Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 If the worm has visible wear definitely change it. The level wind on those take a beating since they don’t disengage and spin fast when casting. Keeping them clean and oiled is key. Do that and you shouldn’t eat up pawls. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted August 8, 2019 Super User Posted August 8, 2019 I believe you figured it out, but just to confirm for you my royal express ii is 5000 series with thumbar almost 1.5” Quote

Thanks for measuring! I was feeling lost for a few days, couldn't find any dimensions for Abu spools/frames...nothing. No response from Abu either. Stinks when the stickers are worn off and can't find any way to identify the real. Even the reel seat was coming back as a 6000 series. I'm thinking, no way this narrow spool is a 6000 series. Anyhow. Thanks everyone. Mystery solved. Quote
