VinnyR Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Time to over think another thing. How low do you guys go on braid test for casting gear? I've been using 30# 832 for the past couple of years, and I've always had a lot of backlashes when I try to cast far and cover a lot of water especially with a light bait like a frog. Not day-ending backlashes, just annoying tangles from the line digging in. My question is do you guys find the line digging in to be significantly less problematic at 40# and 50# compared to 30? And if so, does it sacrifice any significant casting distance? I've used 50# regular power pro before and couldn't cast nearly as far as the 30# 832, but not sure if that's because of the line diameter or slickness. Probably a little both Need new line for two reels, on one I'm torn between 30-40#, and the other 40-50#. Probably a stupid question but I like asking you guys questions, I always seem to learn something I wasn't even looking for Quote

DenhamBruce Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 I think if you went up to 40lb you would backlash quite a bit less and lot sacrifice much casting distance. Also remember to spool your braid very tightly upon the initial spooling. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted August 8, 2019 Super User Posted August 8, 2019 The brand of line you use has little to do with the amount of backlashes you get. I use nothing but 20lb braid (Sufix 832) and I never have the line dig in. As with almost everyone I may get a backlash once in a while but when I do, it’s because of user error, not the brand of line I’m using. 1 Quote

Maybe my diameter isn't too small but I'm not winding it tight enough on the spool Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted August 8, 2019 Super User Posted August 8, 2019 I used to get line dig in on anything less than 50 lb. Changed my brand of reel to Lews and now I get it done with 20 lb. Can't explain it except that is must wind on at a different crisscross rate. 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted August 8, 2019 Super User Posted August 8, 2019 I've got 20# Power Pro on my President - rarely have a backlash, haven't noticed any dig-in, and I get plenty of distance on my casts. Most of it is dialing the reel in properly - tension, brakes & drag. 1 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted August 9, 2019 Super User Posted August 9, 2019 What reel? With braid I found that setting tension spool a little bit tighter than usual help. If you whip too hard on braid also trend to backlash/dig in more, doesn’t matter what line size. I use #30 original PP and J-braid on Curado 70 with no problem. With light lure (not frog obviously I use #10 on conquest 50 a little bit of overrun but no dig in). Braid is not coil up as mono/FC so you would have to thumb it sooner otherwise braid will run back into your spool causing dig in/backlash. 1 Quote

I guess I don't really know anything about how to tune a reel -- how would I know where to set the spool tension before I spool it up? In the past I just didn't touch it until after the line was on it and I was adjusting it to balance casting distance and braking Quote
Super User JustJames Posted August 9, 2019 Super User Posted August 9, 2019 Daiwa claim tatula 100 to be zero adjuster. I don’t have one and not sure how loose the spool daiwa set on that reel. If you move the spool and hear some knocking, the spool is too loose, in my opinion. I like my daiwa, especially with braid on light lure to be “ no side to side play” after that I use brake dial to get it to where I don’t have a lot of line buffing out. You still need to use your thumb more than usual when bomb cast lure. In this case you might have to sacrifice distance for spool control until you get used to with how fast spool spin. I hope this make sense, but I believe others that have more experience than me will jump in and help you out. 1 Quote
Dens228 Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 I use 30 pound braid for everything except crankbaits (20 lb braid) and frogs/punching (65 lb braid) I have no issues with backlashing. Well most of the time! LOL 1 Quote
