OCBassman Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Im new to the bigger swimbaits. I just purchased a Dobyns Fury FR 795SB. I will be throwing 168 Swavers, hud 68 and 8" magdrafts with it to start. My question is. Would I be better starting with a Copolymer Line? As apposed to floro or braid. Thanx for any input. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted August 4, 2019 Super User Posted August 4, 2019 I think so. I would never use braid for swimbaits because it's prone to cast offs. If the spool stops for any reason your bait goes flying off into the abyss. You could use fluoro but I'm not sure there's much advantage to it. I've been using 25lb Sufix Siege on my swimbait rods but i'm sure copoly would be a good choice too. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 4, 2019 Super User Posted August 4, 2019 Can't help you with big swimbaits as I don't use them, but seeing this is your first post, welcome to the forums! 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 4, 2019 Super User Posted August 4, 2019 Your rod of choice is OK for everything listed except with the 8" Hudd may be under powered. Braid can and does cut soft swimbaits and backlashes casting heavier lures can be a nightmare. Anytime you using FC factor in 80% knot strength and line memory. I use Sunline Deifeir Armillo 25lb (.016D) for all my swimbaits, wake baits/ rats. Tom PS, had to look up 8" Magdraft should be OK at 3 oz. 4 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 6, 2019 Global Moderator Posted August 6, 2019 I like copolymer or mono for big swimbaits for the same reasons Tom listed. Berkley Big Game, Pline, and Hi-SEAS Grand Slam are my lines of choice. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted August 6, 2019 Super User Posted August 6, 2019 I would go with copoly over braid or fluoro, but I'd also go with mono over copoly. 1 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted August 6, 2019 Super User Posted August 6, 2019 Berkley Big Game in 20-25#. Cheap and strong as all heck. 1 Quote
ike8120 Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 I have been using KastKing copolymer and I am very happy with it. 1 Quote

waymont Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 The best copolymer I've tried so far is McCoy copolymer line. It's super limp and great for casting heavy lures like 168 s wavers. I use 17 and 20lb with good success. Sometimes I use 40lb PP with the 20lb as a leader and that works great too. 2 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 10, 2019 Super User Posted August 10, 2019 I don't fish bigger swimbaits. I do know that 30# braid easily snaps when a sudden stop occurs. (Also know it will straighten jig hooks with a steady pull. ) Knot strength with flouro is not quite as good as mono or co-polymer. Given the cost of larger swimbaits I'd go with a heavier (than what I normally use) co-polymer or mono. 1 Quote

I don't fish as heavy as you guys do but I've been fishing the McCoy on a couple of my set ups. The owner of the shop she talked me into trying it, I'm satisfied but my lines are lighter than yours I'm sure. I find the McCoy to be decent stuff. Quote

I really like the 10 and 12lb for crank baits, and top water. Straight 15lb is cool for jigs. 1 Quote
