DROPSHOT ROD RECOMMENDATIONS

Looking for suggestions for a replacement dropshot rod to replace my 7 foot 2 inch Shimano Cumara that I broke awhile back. It was Medium action with Extra Fast tip. The red one with very little reel seat. It was the perfect dropshot rod for me. Shimano replaced with a 7 foot Expride. It is a great rod and I am using it to dropshot currently but it is not perfect for that technique.

 The qualities I am looking for are 7ft 2in length or very close, the extremely light tip 6-8 inches like the Cumara had. A bare minimum reel seat. The closest rod as far as specs I have found is the PHENIX M1 7FT 2IN spinning rod. I fish Lake Lanier and dropshotting is my primary technique. I love it. I am willing to invest in a rod. The NRX is not out of my price range but they only offer a dropshot specific rod in a 6ft 10in I think. I would prefer to spend less also. 

 Please give me some suggestions. The rod length is important. I don’t think I would be happy with a rod shorter than 7ft 1in or longer than maybe 7ft 4in. Does anyone have any experience with the PHENIX rod I mentioned?

Hello Adam and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ 

While I've fished 'several' drop shot rigs, I don't really feel any singular stick can do it all.

I prefer to have at least a couple - specifically one each for lighter / shallower applications and a deeper / heavier deal.

That said, I picked up a Diawa set up last spring and have been duly impressed with it's versatility.

If I were to fish only one - this Tatula Elite AGS 7' 1" Med  Brent Ehrler rod would probably be it.

Agree with A-Jay totally.  I am an old dropshotter from years ago and I prefer different rods for different presentations.  That may be getting into the minutiae a little too much but I have different rods for casting, vertical and dragging a dropshot.  My favorite rod in differing lengths is the CastAway Skeleton followed by the Quantum Smoke.

The M1 is a great rod. Very fast but soft if that makes any sense.  I don't drop shot usually but did take it to Erie and had a PB of 4+ on the drop shot. The handle doesn't hold up very well. But I fished this rod ALOT more than my Kistlers, Champ or my Zodia rods.Used it for pond hoppin and always seemed to find it in my hand on the boat. The blank is balanced and light. I had an old Fuego 2000(light gray and red) on it. If it had a better reel seat like a VSS I would sell all my rods and replace with them.

 

My boy has glued the handle back together a lot and still fishes with it.

I bought a G Loomis NRX 872s a few years back while I didn't buy it for that purpose I found it a very suitable drop shot rod.

I agree with A-Jay as well. I have the casting version of his and its power rated M-MH. It is the Finesse rod. I can throw weightless Senkos a mile as well as Ned rigs. The AGS are fantastic. I can only imagine their spinning setups being much more sensitive than mine in a ML or M. I just got the 7'6" AGS flippin rod for $170. You can score a deal on them occasionally. I personally use an Alpha Angler Wrench for dropshotting and it is excellent. They also have a dropshot rod but its more for vertical work.

+1 ... A Dobyns SF 702 & 703 pair in the series of your choice make a nice drop shot set up - but if you could only have one then you picked a great one A-Jay !

The only rod I own that's under 7' is my drop shot rod. It's very awkward to drop vertically onto fish you see on your graph with a long rod.
