I currently use a 7'6" Extra Heavy Duckett Ghost for my frogs, heavier jigs/t-rigs. I've never found specs on the action of this rod, but it's definitely fast.

I want to just leave a frog on this Duckett 100% of the time and get a new Heavy, Moderate-Fast Rod for flipping/dragging 3/4oz-1.5oz jigs/t-rigs.

I've focused my search to rods that are actually labeled by the maker as "Heavy, Mod-Fast" so there may be a "Heavy, Fast" rated rod out there that has a softer tip than most Fast rated rods, but I don't have the option to handle any rods before purchase, so I'm relying on y'all.

After research, here are the rods I've come across: All of these are "Heavy, Moderate-Fast" unless noted otherwise.

  • 7’3” Kistler Magnesium 2 $160 (1/2-3oz)
  • 7’6” Kistler KLX Frog, Jig, Worm $200 (3/8-1.25oz)
  • 7’10” Kistler KLX Bad Boy $200 (3/8-5oz)
    • extra heavy, mod-fast
  • 7’9” Abu Garcia Veracity $250 (1-4oz)
  • 7’3” Lew’s Custom Speed Stick $140 (1/2-1oz)
  • 7’3” Falcon Jason Christie Signature $100 (1/2-1.5oz)
  • 7’6” Falcon Expert (3/8-1.25oz) $220
  • 7’5” iRod Genesis 2 IRG754F Magic Stick (1/2-2oz) $150
  • 7’11” iRod Genesis 2 IRG7114P Bub’s Punch Rod (1/2-2oz) $150
  • 7’6” Okuma Scott Martin TCS (1/4-1.5oz) $155

**Side note. I'm not a big hard swimbait guy, but I do throw a Jackall Ganteral (2.5oz) around some, so this new rod would likely be a good match for that too if I get one with the higher weight rating.

That $150-$200 is what I've shopped in, but I'd spend more if it was worth it. Don't find many real expensive rods with anything but a fast/x-fast action anyways.

My top choices have been:

1. 7'5" iRod Genesis 2 IRG754F "Magic Stick" (1/2-2oz) but i'm not sure what action this Rod has because their website lists it as Fast in one place, and if you scroll down it's listed as Fast/Moderate. Then Tackle Warehouse lists it as Fast. If I cold confirm it has that slightly slower tip that i'm looking for i'd buy it.

2. 7'11" iRod Genesis 2 IRG7114P "Bub's Punch Rod" (1/2-2oz). probably perfect for my use, BUT... I'd like to keep it a little shorter if possible.

3. 7’6” Kistler KLX Frog, Jig, Worm $200 (3/8-1.25oz). Not a huge fan of micro guides, but not a big deal.

4. 7’3” Kistler Magnesium 2 $160 (1/2-3oz). I just like this rod because of the 3oz max rating on it for that swim bait, but the other rods are more sensitive for my jigs I think.

I'm long winded, I know. If i'm caught in the weeds just tell me to shut up and i'll get the iRod Magic Stick.

I can already hear the "Dobyns Fury" recommendations coming lol.

Thanks.

Mine is a St.Croix Mojo Bass 7'11"  H/MF and I can tell the action is really a mod. Fast one.

I could check the complete specs if needed. It's one of the few of my St.Croix I really like, only downside is lenght. Cumbersome to carry.

Just wondering why you are looking into a mod/fast action for heavy jigs if you've been using a fast action? I know it's a personal preference thing, but I'm assuming you want the tip to load up prior to setting the hook. The down side to that is it will load as you drag a 1oz. jig too.  I use a St. Croix Mojo 7ft. hvy/fst (MBC70HF) for my punching and heavy skirted jigs. It's a bit heavy, but casts well and is plenty sensitive.

@papajoe222 My Duckett is Fast enough that my heavy jigs gets tossed every once in a while at the surface. It doesn’t happen often, but since i’m buying this rod to fill a gap I want a rod with a softer tip to mitigate that.

That's because the the 735c is the EXACT rod your describing in what you want.

I have a Magic Stick and I would call the taper ModFast.  It’s a great rod, very powerful and quite versatile.

Bought the 7’6” Kistler KLX Frog, Jig, Worm Rod.

This is what they recommended I buy for 3/4oz jigs. I asked if the H3 was more sensitive and they said a little so you should be happy. I ended up stealing an ags tatula elite but I may go back to Kistler for 3/8 jigs as the tatula is too heavy for them.

I wasn’t sure how I’d like 11” handle, and it definitely is short feeling.

Got the last one in stock. Got it on sale for $200 yesterday now they’re back up to $270. Now they have a buy two rods get one free sale.

You've already got your rod, but for future reference, I grabbed a St. Croix LBC76MHMF Legend Tournament earlier this season.  They sell it as a "Pitchin'/Light Flipping rod, and I'm really enjoying it.

It's spec'd at 3/8 oz. to 1 1/4 oz. and I really like the action and taper.

@Further North I was looking at that rod too but took it off my list because the KLX was on sale. I haven’t fished the KLX yet, but after holding it the 11” handle feels too short.

Will probably end up selling for the St Croix you mentioned. The handle is 16” and it doesn’t have micro guides like the KLX.

The handle is nice...on the guides: I'm not sure if they qualify as micro-guides, but they are pretty small.

I like the smaller guides, so it's not a problem for me.
