Ultralight Fishing question.

I was wondering if anyone here uses a medium-light rod instead of an ultralight for lures from 1/32 oz-1/8 oz even though most medium-lights are rate 1/8-1/2oz?

My Ugly Stik Elite Ultralight snapped on a bluegill no less. It was under warranty, so Shakespeare is sending me a new one. I was considering selling it when it comes in because I like the feel of a particular medium-light rod. It would primarily be used for very light beetle spins, rooster tails, etc on panfish. If paired with a small reel and light line would this hinder the casting on those tiny baits? Thanks all.

Does that particular rod come in a Light? Split the difference.

 

Personally, I wouldn't try to toss anything less than 1/16 on a ML rated at 1/8...and even that's pushing it.

I use a medium light rod rated 1/16 to 5/16 for light drop shots and t rigs, but not lighter than 1/16. I can cast decently far with it but I don't know about 1/32

With beetle spin, 1/16oz road runner and 1/8 rooster tail, you should be fine with ML. The problem is ML rod might not have enough play/bend on rod tip for paper mouth of crappies.

 

For 1/32oz jig head, you would need UL rod unless you add weighted bobbers.

How did you snap ugly stick on bluegill?

You will be able to use a ML rod but it wouldn't be as effective as an UL rod. If you want to use UL lures you would be best to use an UL rod. Casting distance and accuracy, fighting fish, and sensitivity will all be optimized by using and UL setup.

I use ML for everything small and finesse from crappie to bass gear. As long as you pair the reel and line properly, you won’t have any issues.

User error on my part as far as the Ugly Stik went. I'm pretty sure that right at the moment it swam around a rock, I tried to pull it out of the water. I still have two Ugly Stik Elites in medium that I use for live bait fishing for bass even though those are rarely used these days since I've really started enjoying fishing with artificials. They're great rods for that purpose. Not too crazy on the weight/balance of them for lures which is why I have some much more expensive setups for different bass techniques. I've gotten use to using split grip rods now in favor of full grip cork/foam. The reel that was on my ultralight setup is a Daiwa Regal 2000.

I looked at the Daiwa Aird-X ML rated for 1/8-1/4oz., the Lew's Wally Marshall Pro ML rated for 1/32-1/4 oz., and the Daiwa Presso UL rated for 1/32-1/4oz. I'm not sure if I'm willing to bump up to something like the Fenwick Elite Tech River Runner even though it sounds fantastic. Daiwa impresses me at their price points.

I’m using Shimano Sensilite UL 6’6, but this rod fish more like Lite than UL, good backbone and reasonable soft tip. It can cast down to 1/24oz jig head plus plastic all the way to 1/4oz with no problem. I’m also thinking of getting new UL rod that can cast down to 1/32oz or lower for bluegill. The one that I might buy is Daiwa spinmatic or Daiwa presso 5’6 or 6’.

The Sensilite is pretty good versatile rods, can handle crappies 14” and also nice size bass without a sweat and pretty reasonable price as well.

BTW your regal LT is nice light weight and pretty smooth, I checked it out at local store and definitely will get one in this LT series. I’m just not sure if I should get 1000d or 2000s.

go by the manufacturer ... if you want an ultralight rod ... buy an ultralight rod ... i own the bps microlight ... ultralight rod ...1/32 - 1/4 oz. ... 6 ft. fast ... 2pc. ...  1-6 line ... outstanding ...many yrs. ..

I use a ml rod for ul applications. Sometimes I’m pulling through thick vegetation, and sometimes I like to have a little extra muscle just in case I get hold of something bigger than a panfish.

I saw this rod while browsing the web. It interests me as well. Looks really nice. Thanks on the Regal. I actually like the buttery smooth action of it over the Pflueger president and president limited edition I use to have, and I even prefer it over my Shimano Nasci. I've handled the Legalis, Revros, Fuego, and BG. All very impressive. That makes me want to get a Tatula LT later on which I've read is comparable to the Shimano Ci4+.

I do have an old Tatula ML rod which is used for dropshot. Phenomenal feel, action, and light as a feather. My other Medium-light is a Lew's Mach II combo used for ned rigs and grubs primarily. Nice, but it's nowhere near the Tatula.

Dobyns FR 661 SF with 4# mono should work for you if 6'6" rod is OK. Tip action is soft enough for light biting crappie and the blank strong enough for those 2 lb slabs or occasional bass.

I have heard great things about the Fury series from Dobyns, but mostly for bassing. Interesting. I've held some of the heavier models along with the Falcon Bucoo SRs. Both feel great in hand to me. I noticed the Bucoo SR has an Ultralight for $50-$60. My only gripe there is that the light grey Eva handles would dirty up pretty quickly on the Bucoos.

You can call Dobyns and tell them what you are looking for ask if the FR661SF will work for you.

I went with the Daiwa Presso for now cuz I found a good deal on one. I got plenty of ideas for future additions from y'all too.

Now if I can just keep myself from buying a Daiwa Aird-X rod and Falcon Bucoo SR when I just bought this Presso and an old black/gold Tatula.

I found a medium/light at a local boat shop for $150, but they gave me a discount for being a regular customer with their tackle. Cost me $110.

Going to use it for dropshot.

Dont worry about the old tatula rod, I got 3 of those lol. I still have brand new 2018 tatula rod with tag but refuse to use that. Believe you made the right decision to get Tatula rod.

I have the 7' ultralight Presso. Decent rod but definitely pretty limber. It does has some backbone though, once you get pass the soft tip. I have mine paired up with a daiwa QG750 reel with 6 lbs test.

Very nice looking combo. I have been throwing small crankbaits with it for crappies.

I will, and the Tatula could not have been more highly recommended from what I have read on here. I was very excited to find one. I'm not crazy about cork split grips even though people love them. I have them on my St Croix Mojo Bass. I'm not impressed. My hand is even on the threads to the reel seat for that rod. The spinning version drives me crazy. Great rod otherwise, and I noticed the new Tatulas have cork. I'd rather get an XT or old Tatula out of personal preference.

Thanks for the input. I realize that most ultralight setups will have a lot of play like that, but Daiwa continues to impress me. I read lots of positive reviews before I made the purchase. I'm pretty sure that I'll enjoy it. I'd switch all my gear to Daiwa if I didn't have such nice other setups.
