Ron Williams Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 I just joined the forum today after searching for Hazel Creek Lake info and finding the majority on here. I live about 30 minutes from HCL and love to fish the bucketmouths. I will be doing my best to work some points and brush areas with a kayak tomorrow. Hopefully I can find a couple nice ones to pull my fishing yak around the lake. If anyone has any advice on the bite there this time of year it would be greatly appreciated. I hope to start fishing it pretty regularly and would be happy to give any Intel I can to any travelling from further away to fish this lake. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 25, 2019 Global Moderator Posted July 25, 2019 I love fishing that lake, but it's over 3 hours away so it's not often I make it there. The biggest bass I've ever hooked was in that lake, well over 10 pounds, spun and pulled our 16' johnboat a good ways before it straightened my hook. 10 of the 11 muskie I've caught were from there too including my PB 42 incher. A majority of my big bass out there have come from the lower half of the lake, basically from the north boat ramp cove straight across, south to the other ramp. These are some of the bass from my last trip there with my BIL. 2 Quote

Will have to plan a trip up there and hit Thousand Hills State Park again also. Last time I was there it was electric only, could not run gas motors. Can you run your outboard now? Quote

If you're after bass, it's kind of dealer's choice. The lake is pretty full of timber, so most of what I use is soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits along with some squarebills and other topwaters. I have never used a leader with my bass baits and never been bit off by one that I can think of but my BIL lost a sqarebill to one on one of his first cast of the day our last time there. 1 Quote

I kayak fished it and caught a few small ones on plastics, but nothing of note. They seemed to be on the main points and in timber, but the bite was slow. RubberDuck Posted August 26, 2019 Posted August 26, 2019 I was there on Saturday. Caught fish on a variety of baits, but anything that looked like a shad worked the best for me. Biggest was 5.5#. Plenty of little fish to be had back in the coves, looked like they were chasing bait. I stayed on the east side of the lake and stayed pretty shallow. I may have found more nice fish If I would have ventured in deeper water, but I don't know. I did not have a run in with a muskie. One thing to note was the amount of big dead carp on the bank. I saw dozens of them! Does anyone know what this might have been from? I didn't get that good of a look at them to see if they had arrow holes in them. Does anyone know how the lake tends to fish in the fall? 1 Quote

If anyone can give me any local knowledge of the water, baits, and tips it will be appreciated. Lots of heavy cover so don't bother bringing the finesse gear. I've done best with plastics and squarebills. 1 Quote

There's usually some vegetation and last time I was there it had a ton of pads but being that it's a water source lake, not sure if they may have treated them or not. It usually has a little bit of grass in some places though and the south side of the road has a lot more if you can access that with a kayak. Quote

The north bank of that easternmost cove was mostly pads. Managed to take the frog away from a couple of fish. Quote
