what to rig for deep ledges if I have 2 rods on a boat?

 

I intend to fish around 20 to 40 feet deep, I can bring 2 rods with me on the boat. My go to rig is a 1oz Carolina rig. I am need your opinions on what my 2nd rig should be.

 

its usually ledges, rock piles and a few submerged houses

weather looks to be rainy with some segments of sunlight

 

-Is it sensible to set it up for suspended bass?

-should i try a 1/10 oz weighted wacky on a 7" senko (is this even viable)?

-should i set it up for a diff presentation (like what)?

Salt water 3 way swivels.  Are great with braid to see the rod twitches or steady deep bends.

I second the spoon idea, i love them when fishing ledges.

I will always also have a big swim bait tied on that I can slow roll at whatever depth I need.

For 20-40 I only need a 1 oz. Hopkins Shorty Spoon and a drop shot setup.

If it were me, I'd have a dropshot rigged up on one rod. And on the other rod, I'd be alternating between a football jig and a 1oz jighead with a Keitech on the back.

I prefer a 3/4-1oz football jig or a T-rigged 10in ribbontail with a 3/8oz weight at those depths.

There is a spot where a ledge at 20' drops off to around 75' rather abruptly.  I throw a Popmax there, from the deep water, and smallies crush it halfway to the boat, over that deep water.  I assume they are sitting on that 20' ledge, and attacking from a distance.

Either a jig, or a t-rigged craw.

At that depth, assuming it's a sandy bottom not a weedy bottom, I would be using four setups:

 

#1: Drop shot with a slightly heavier weight than you'd normally use.

#2: A football head jig

#3: A T-Rig

#4: Deep diving crankbaits

 

That said, a Carolina rig is also an acceptable fifth option, I just don't use it as much. This time of year, I'm fairly partial to the drop shot though.

just a local reservoir, just will be with family on a boat of my own.

1) never ever tried a drop shot =( although i am looking to try it

2) got it packed and ready to rock tom.. never caught one on this tho

3) did this and this will be my last resort if the above 2 fails

4) the deepest CB i have just goes to 16 ft... will this be enough?

Look up "jacking a crankbait."  Basically, you put a loose bullet weight in front of the crankbait, just enough  weight to make it sink.  Let hit the bottom, and fish it like a jerkbait, sort of.  It's awkward, but I've caught fish in 40+ FOW.  Not my favorite thing to do, but is a creative solution.

1. 3/4 oz Scrounger jig with 6" to 7" Sluggo in Shad color.

2. 3/8 to 1/2 oz bullet weight T-rigged  8" ribbon tail worm in purple color.

You can fish the Scrounger and T-rig as deep as you want.

You can try it, but ideally if you are fishing at 20ft, I would try to get one that goes down at least 20ft. The reason being you want it to hit the bottom now and then and deflect. You can also try pegging a weight to the line a few inches in front of the crankbait which I've seen some people do to get a little extra depth, but is not something I personally do.

 

Also I don't know the bottom you are fishing, but if it's mostly 20ft, but there's some areas that are 15 or 16ft down your retrieve, it may end up working well. And occasionally fish will hit a crank higher in the water column as well, so it won't hurt to give it a shot until you get something deeper.

I feel this line is somewhat underrated as I have had nothing but success with them.

Hooks seem sharp and have held up to grinding on the bottom.

Ive got a 25.5, a 14.5 and a 8.5.
