Creek Spinning Setup

Looking to get into a decent spinning setup, my budget is right around $250. I think for that I can get into something pretty decent. I'm looking at st croix mojo, dobyns savvy series or fury series, medium light fast tip, is there any others I should look at? I'm thinking 6'10 or 7'. Right now I use a 6'9 and I really like that length but it might be too long. In my kayak it hits alot of limbs above if I dont see it coming which just ties my stomach into knots. But I'm 6'4 and I tend to like a little longer rod but I'm not always sure what is gained by this.  

 

For the reel I'm looking at a shimano nasci, daiwa bg. Is there any in this price range that compete with these two? I'd be willing to go up to $150 on the reel.

Look into the bps carbonlite Rods. I have a medium fast paired up with a nasci. It’s a great combo. The medium is 1/8 to 1/2. It handles allot of presentations well. It’s also pretty tuff I’ve banged it into branches in tight shoreline areas. The combo comes to $220. When I can only bring one rod that’s the one I bring. It really is a do all combo.

Depending on how you define a creek anything over 6'6" might be a bit cumbersome. Also, I stick with my modest priced stuff because creek fishing (as you stated) can be rough on gear. I've got some discontinued Cabela's Pro Guides that are light and serve well. There's lots of good stuff in the 50-100.00 range. I find that name brands tend to not have many shorter choices.

What lures do you plan on throwing with this combo?

Pass on the fury. I love dobyns but my furys collect dust. Spend more on the rod for sure.

I agree.  I consider a creek something that is a few feet to, at most, 15' wide. For creeks I usually use something 5' to 6'.  And fishing creeks can get slippery and going through the brush is rough on a rod.  For creek fishing I use a Cabela's rod and a cheap spinning reel.

I realize you're asking about spinning rig. But last week I was prepping for a creek fishing trip and pulled out a 5'6" casting rod and mounted a Shimano ALX baitcaster on it. It was so easy to fish I've taken it twice since then. I wouldn't go longer than 6'.  The creek I fished was 15' to 50' in width but my combo allowed easy 25 yards cast with an 1/8 oz spinnerbait so it was a perfect fit.

I agree.

My creek and river combos are older shimano spinning combo all around 6'6" with 1000 size reels. They usually get beat up pretty good due to all the rocks and sand. They also get dunked when wading in the water. They have held up pretty decent over the years though.

I usually carry three combos with me if I'm bass fishing. Small worm or plastics. Small spinnerbait and a small jerkbait. That usually fills whatever I come across.

For creek fishing my old Garcia Conolon 4 Star, B501-A, 5 1/2' rod and one of my Mitchell 308 or 408 ultra-light spinning reels is what I've been using for the past 50+ years. They still work as good today as they did way back then.
