Super User OkobojiEagle Posted July 23, 2019 Super User Posted July 23, 2019 Opinions please: Do you prefer sun protection fishing gloves with no fingers, half fingers or only the finger tips exposed. 2nd. question: Do you find handling baits with treble hooks problematic when wearing these light gloves? 3rd. question: Do you wear these gloves only during the sunniest part of the day or do you wear them at sunrise/early morning and sunset as well? Enough questions about gloves for now. oe Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted July 23, 2019 Super User Posted July 23, 2019 1) I wear half length 2) Yes, I sometimes get hooks caught in them and it's a pain but a pain I’m willing to endure to avoid skin cancer. 3) I only wear them when the UV index is high. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted July 23, 2019 Super User Posted July 23, 2019 I can’t wear gloves at all. Hooks are always getting stuck in them, and I hate the way they feel. My hands are the only part of me that gets hit by direct sun and I keep a lot of sunscreen on them. Quote
Dens228 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Mine are half fingers, and have an open palm. I have no problems with bait or hooks I don't wear them often enough. Mainly because I'm lazy. LOL Quote
Yumeya Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 These are the ones I use. I love them, I wear them when the sun is out period, even when fishing trebles and it has never been a problem. https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Research-Active-Casting-Gloves/dp/B078XZ95N1/ref=sr_1_7?gclid=Cj0KCQjwvdXpBRCoARIsAMJSKqLYfzU1XjvFhzzkDq_b9LrxOh4vwkLt8JsNP-9pYInwPiKoPkKBslUaAlohEALw_wcB&hvadid=178105474445&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9029825&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=e&hvrand=17904796911955702451&hvtargid=kwd-76924539567&hydadcr=9412_9900304&keywords=outdoor+research+sun+gloves&qid=1563843103&s=gateway&sr=8-7 Quote
SlappinKraken Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 1.Half fingers 2. I rarely use lures with treble hooks. 3. I put them on once I'm in the boat (often before sunrise) and never take them off. I think wearing the gloves are just as comfortable as not, and the days you catch a bunch of big ones it eliminates 'bass palm'. Quote
The Bassman Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I wear open palm Simms fingerless. They're feather light so you don't know you have them on. One thing of note, though. Another thread on the subject included the question why wear them when most of us are wearing short sleeve shirts, anyway. Good point. They do give you that "he knows what he's doing" look. lol Quote
ohboyitsrobby Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I wear the buff half finger gloves. They do occasionally get hooks in them. But.... I have a great big scar on my back that says I have to go through whatever necessary means to avoid another. Quote

Super User Koz Posted July 23, 2019 Super User Posted July 23, 2019 I wear half finger gloves, but there's a catch. I use my left hand for holding and lipping bass and I found that my Columbia sun protection gloves were always snagging on the teeth of the bass. And because my hands are not calloused the teeth would start sinking into and ripping my skin as well. My solution is that I wear a bike glove on my left hand. it offers more padding, especially in the thumb area. But it gets really stinky with sweat and fish smell and needs to be washed once a week. I wish someone would make sun gloved with a padded thumb. One of these days I'll probably get around to sewing a leather thumb pad to my sun gloves, but as of yet I have not found the time. Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted July 23, 2019 Super User Posted July 23, 2019 I do not like sun screen on my hands so when needed, I wear 'sun gloves' Have & use HUK, Simms and Buff gloves. Finger length and over all 'thickness / thinness' of the material is important to me. Finger length can't be too long; needs to stop at or close to the first knuckle. Longer makes knot tying harder. Material can't be 'too thick' as I seem to loose 'my feel'. Prefer a snug fit. Doesn't need to be hot, just sunny for me to be wearing them. A-Jay Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted July 23, 2019 Super User Posted July 23, 2019 I wore Simms half finger gloves but switched last year. I liked the Simms but found they wore out fairly quickly and that hook points stuck to them like Velcro. I switched to full finger Fish Monkey gloves. I was hesitant to go full finger at first but like them now. I can do most anything with them - cast, thumb the spool, work a finesse lure, etc. pretty much everything except tie a knot. For that I remove them, but they go on/off easier than my Simms did. I have to say the sun protection is good, but the biggest upside so far has been protecting my hands/fingers from getting scarred up while removing hooks, lipping fish, etc. I got a nasty rash and infection a few years back so this has really helped. Could I go back to half fingers - yes maybe... but right now I’m liking the full finger and man are they durable! Many bass (and pike in our waters here) ... and here’s how my hands look when I forget my Fish Monkeys in the Jeep! 1 Quote
JediAmoeba Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I wear these for ice fishing but they are thin and not insulated Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I got some of the Sol Aris gloves by KastKing and they come to the first knuckle, leaving fingertips exposed. They do snag a treble hook now and then but that's a minor inconvenience for avoiding melanoma IMO!!! Quote
