Arobb2012 Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 I'm heading to a lake this weekend I have never fished before. There is a decent population of hybrid striped bass in this lake. I have done some research and it looks like a walking/popping top water and clipless cranks are a good start. Any other recommendations for that species. I'm going to try and target largemouth and hybrids both on the same trip. I will be fishing from my kayak so I can target fish in the deeper parts of the lake if I spot something on my fish finder. Any suggestions are appreciated. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted July 22, 2019 Super User Posted July 22, 2019 In my lakes with hybrid strippers, aka “wipers”, the fish cruise around in open water chasing shad. One of my favorite baits is a blade bait in silver. 1 Quote

Don't ask me why I say that. ? jj 1 Quote
DSTN Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 I second all the recommendations above. They are all about shad around here so pretty much anything white or chrome seems to a solid bet. Good luck, they are an absolute blast. They just pull and pull. They can be a handful when trying to remove treble hooks because they are so strong and feisty. Would recommend having a fish grip and pliers handy. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 23, 2019 Global Moderator Posted July 23, 2019 Hybrid strippers prefer dolla dolla bills. Hybrid stripers like topwater walking baits, jerkbaits, paddle tail swimbaits, lipless baits, jigging spoons, flutter spoons, and jigging raps. 2 1 Quote
Arobb2012 Posted July 23, 2019 Author Posted July 23, 2019 Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have most of that covered going to check on my lure stash for some spoons. I have some just need to find them. Quote
umckibben Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 We had a lake around here with wipers, we would absolutely wear then out on big hammer swim baits that was a blast! Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted July 24, 2019 Super User Posted July 24, 2019 A good lure for hybrid stripers is the Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted July 24, 2019 Super User Posted July 24, 2019 A-rig, chrome lipless, swimbait, chrome spoons, any top water if you see them busting shad in the morning or evening. In the morning you can look for the birds first to see if the are on bait fish, the hybirds/stripers will be near by. Quote
VolFan Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Roadrunners or Spooks were all I've ever used much for them. But seriously, wear your PFD. Theyre like a bluegill crossed with a marlin, bulldog and then ruuuuuun. 1 Quote
