KraskiBass Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 Hello, new to fishing on lakes and I've discover this particular Jig to go fish with, but I'm unsure if is necessary to have the Trout Magnet SOS line 2lb or 4lb? Any experts on this particular lure? Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted July 22, 2019 Super User Posted July 22, 2019 It's not necessary. I fish Trout Magnet jigs on Stren, P-Line, Sufix Promix to Kastking Flourokote lines from 4lb - 6lb range. 1 Quote

Any experts on this particular lure? First thing, it sounds like you may be relatively new to fishing so I would watch a bunch of the videos here to learn some good basics. Also, when starting out I never recommend using line below 6 pound test and usually opt for 8 pound test so you have some forgiveness. Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted July 22, 2019 Super User Posted July 22, 2019 We've caught crappie on this jig. We use light spin rods and 4lb mono 1 Quote

Trout Magnets are 1/64 oz. You have to drop to 4# line to cast them with any kind of distance. 2 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted July 22, 2019 Super User Posted July 22, 2019 Are we talking about Trout magnet jig or trout magnet sos line? “ this particular jig” which one? Fried Lemons Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 I’m assuming you are referring to the tiny trout magnet jigs. I have used SOS in 2lb and it is very good line. I do not recommend using 4lb unless you are horsing larger than average fish out of cover. You get significantly better casting distance and line handling with the 2lb. You just need to be diligent about checking your knots and line for fraying. 1 Quote
jr231 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I use braid on everything both spinning and casting. I use leaders always unless i am fishing top water.. the use of leaders depends on the application but they are always beneficial to help my bait sink, and stay down especially with plastics. And also I can break off if I have to without cutting alot of braid. Also the casting distance cannot be beat IMO . Especially if you can't afford luxury lines. Also... The braid floats! So bite detection with weightless plastics on your spinning gear is much easier! I use hi-vis yellow with a floro leader. The braid floats and the floro sinks. It's a win-win. Some folks also believe the bass are line shy. Floro leader helps in this department as well. I'd go 15lb braid on my spinning gear to a 6lb floro leader. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 23, 2019 Global Moderator Posted July 23, 2019 I had my son using a trout magnet jighead with a piece of orange trout worm under a bobber on 4lb Mr. Crappie line Saturday to catch a whole bunch of bluegills and green sunfish. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted July 23, 2019 Super User Posted July 23, 2019 If I were you I’d fish the Crappie Magnets. A bit larger, a bit heavier, I’d be willing to bet your success will be greater. Use their line. Why not. It’s just a label put on that package. Nothing special about it. There are tons of good mono and flouro out there. 1 Quote
KraskiBass Posted July 26, 2019 Author Posted July 26, 2019 I've went out and bought a Vicious Fishing Panfish 4LB Test Hi-VIS Yellow, it kind of work (still unsure if this is a good line or not) and use the Mini Mini Trout Magnet Jig with a bobber and I did fish 2 blue gills yesterday...wooohooo!!! 2 Quote
Sam Kirk Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Trout fishing you can use 2 lb. Test line. I have for over 30 years. I caught a 25" trout with it. You need to set your drag for 2 lb line. Last week I caught the Biggers large mouth bass with 30 lb. Braided line and 8 lb. leader with a 6" rubber worm. As a beginner I will not go less than 8 lbs. Quote
