If you go the resort route a lot will already be handled for you, just do your research if you plan trips outside the resort. On international travel I hate traveling with cash on me, but it is needed as cards can do nothing for you. I use a company like Western Union to wire myself money in a 2-3 different wires. The benefits; currency exchange, not going through customs with cash, lost or stolen luggage doesn't leave you with nothing, and you can pull it out as you need it. Last trip was 15 days in Barranquilla and Santa Marta Colombia. Packed a 5 pc fly rod in the suitcase and was able to catch some fish I will never see again in my life. Quote

We did some touring the first time and have stayed in and around the resorts since then. Look I to the MoBay club if your going to be in the airport for any given time. I have been to Jamaica, it is a beautiful country but you have to be careful where you go. Stay inside the tourist areas and avoid going to the bad parts of town. I highly recommend you visit Dunn's River Falls which is one of the best places to visit in Jamaica. 2 Quote
lo n slo Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 i was there on an R&R to Kingston in ‘79 while i was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba...beautiful place. they drove on the wrong side of the road though. when we hopped into the airport shuttle van and the driver was this little old man, i felt a sigh of relief, until we hit the road. he was hauling butt on the left side of the road, down these narrow streets (lol), all the while dodging cows, chickens, small push carts and pedestrians. i will never forget that ride for as long as i live. 3 2 Quote

Yeah I did read that but on average a hurricane directly hit Jamaica once ever 10-11 years. Last year while in destin I played golf with a local who said he was in the process of moving to Jamaica to get away from hurricanes. I know it’s possible but I’ll take my chances. Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 -Start by making a checklist. Seriously. The best way not to forget something when traveling is to make a list. I have traveled all over the world for work and I still use a check list. -Passports. Make copies of the ID page and put them in all of your bags. -Plan to spend some time in customs. This is especially true at airports in vacation destinations. You will spend a lot of time waiting in line with your bags. Just plan on it. Also, don't try to joke with the people in customs and be attentive when they are speaking. -Use the smallest carry on possible with just a couple of absolute essentials. It is a real hassle for you and everyone else on the plane to have a giant carry on and personal item on the plane. Just check everything you can. Waiting at the baggage claim isn't that big of a deal. -If you are going for your honeymoon, I assume you are staying at an all-inclusive? If so, you really shouldn't need a ton of cash. Bring cash that you plan to spend, but using a credit card (not debit card) is the most secure. -Check with your cell phone service provider to query coverage/extra charges. 2 Quote

I remember reading a story where a couple went away for a few weeks leaving their car in the long term parking. Someone smashed out a window, took the registration and then proceeded to empty the house while the couple was away. Congrats on the wedding and have fun !! 1 Quote

Super User webertime Posted August 2, 2019 Super User Posted August 2, 2019 I lived and worked in Jamaica for 6 months right after college with no real lasting side effects, but plenty of stories, lol. Stay in tourist spots, if you don't start feeling a buzz after 2 drinks pull the ripcord on them. Bootleg booze is all over the Caribbean (my wife got poisoned 2 years ago in Mexico). Enjoy yourselves, really nice people for the most part. Don't go into Kingston. Don't go in the hills. 1 1 Quote
