Drop Shot: St Croix Mojo vs Bass X

im looking to buy a drop shot rod. I'm between the St Croix Mojo and the Bass X. does anyone have opinions and facts of which one is the better choice.

The Mojo has a better blank so it should be more sensitive.

The bass x are basically the old Mojo's.  I'd also consider the Eyecon, it's a really nice rod even though it's designed for walleye

I have old mojos, new mojos, and bass x. I’ve been a st. Croix fan boy for years, but one thing that bothers me a tid bit is the flex coat that is applied to the entire blank. It’s for durability, I’m sure. See, St. Croix never did this on any of their models, well at least once upon a time. Original premier, Avid, and Legend were “unfinished”. I always felt the full gloss blanks were a touch heavier and slower, but I’m really splitting hairs when I say that. The new mojo has the “better” blank, but I’m pretty dang happy with Bass X rods lately. And if you notice, they went old school with the unfinished blank. And by golly, it does feel lighter and more crisp than the original mojo built on the same material. Just got to be a bit more careful with a rod that isn’t glossed. Try to handle both and which ones you like. In casting, I also like the handle a bit better, as it’s a touch longer than that of the mojo. Can’t speak on behalf of spinning, but don’t think you can go wrong with either.

Mine is a Fenwick EliteTech 6'10" MLXF that is priced between the Bass X and the Mojo... You should check it out as well !

Get a Mojo. I had a bass x and sold it because it was a let down. Not sensitive at all.

Another vote for the Mojo Bass. 

 

I handled the Bass X and the Mojo Bass at the local BPS. I ended up buying the Mojo Bass 6'10" Medium-Light Extra Fast. It's crisp, does well with drop shots (4.5" Roboworms, GY Shade Shape Worms, and 5" Pro Senkos), and throws weightless 4" Senkos with little effort.

I use a St. Croix Avid X 6'9' ML/XF for drop shots and neg rigs and it's a pretty sweet rod. The Mojo Bass is the same blank, so I imagine it would be pretty close.

Yes, both are SCIII but IMHO the Avid Xs are where the St Croix rods become really nice. There is definitely a weight and feel difference between the 2 models despite the blank being the same.

 

I started with the Mojo Bass line as that was the highest end SC rod that was available at the local tackle shops. Then about a year or so ago, one shop started carrying some Legend and Avid models. While I liked the Legend model, the Avid was more in my price range. I’ve been slowly upgrading my rods from the Mojo Bass to Avid X line. The Mojo Bass 6’10” MLXF is actually next on the list once the shop gets a Avid X MLXF rod in stock. Maybe its time to check the shop again. ?

Nice. The Avid X is the most expensive rod I own. Most of my other rods are Mojo Bass or Daiwa Tatula's ($130-150 retail range) which are a solid quality for the price point.

 

And with a ML/XF rod, I'd probably be alright with the Mojo Bass as well, but a lot of the time when I'm fishing a ned rig or drop shot it's hot and the fish are pretty finicky so any sensitivity helps.
