LongJohn87 Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 So i have 4 normal tatula rods for reaction baits and a tatula elite for bottom contact. I'm looking to get a new bottom contact rod around the $300ish price range. do you guys think it is necessary to upgrade from the normal tatula for the moving baits. i think it's pretty sensitive for them. (i saved money to upgrade my whole setup but now i'm rethinking) Quote
r83srock Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 If it’s working for you why change? The term sensitive is a real thing, but overrated. I have $50 rods that are just as sensitive as my $250 rods. Build quality might go up, but probably not. Often times the more expensive rod will have a lighter crisper action, But that difference is much less noticed above $150 or so. A moving bait rod is often slower in action, some Angler’s like that type of action for bottom contact, some not as much. I’d use what you have. Quote
Junger Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I had 3 Tatula rods, the original black and gold version. I liked them, but found them to be just a bit less vibrant compared to some of my other rods when bumping structure or figuring out what the lure was bumping on the bottom. I like the Tatula elites a little more, and the AGS version as much as my GLX, and Orochi XX. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, the OG Tatula are very good rods, especially at $100 when they were marked down for discontinued clearance, but there is room for improvement if your budget allows for it. j bab Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 If I were you and I had $300 to spend on a bottom contact rod I'd get a Tatula Elite AGS or if I didn't care about sticking with Daiwa maybe a Shimano Expride. If I could save up an extra $35 I'd go for an IMX Pro. Fill in gaps in your arsenal with nice gear rather than upgrading your current stuff if it's working well for you. Quote
LonnieP Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I use a Tatula rod for Lipless crankbaits and I really like it and there is no way a more expensive rod would put more fish in the boat. Since you say that you think it’s sensitive enough, I see no reason to upgrade. As far as a new bottom contact rod, I recommend a Kistler Helium 3, which can be found for a lot less than 300 when on sale. Quote
Scrapiron Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 Second the HE3, but I’ll admit I haven’t fished with an Elite AGS. Quote
FishingGeekTX Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 I wouldn't upgrade, tatula looks like nice rods. You won't notice any difference in sensitivity between decent quality graphite rods. You may prefer a different weight, taper, handle, etc., but if your rods fish well, I'd not change if I had a budget. Quote

I've been hearing nothing but amazing things about the expride so it's up there in my choices and the ags don’t hate me but the silver is just mehhh. I will probably end up doing that thanks for the response 2 hours ago, LonnieP said: I use a Tatula rod for Lipless crankbaits and I really like it and there is no way a more expensive rod would put more fish in the boat. Yeah i don't think i'll end up upgrading those rods they're plenty good. i'll take a look at the helium 3 though, have seen many people recommend those on other topics. thanks for the reply 1 hour ago, FishingGeekTX said: I wouldn't upgrade, tatula looks like nice rods. I can put the money towards other stuff i need. Thanks for the response! 2 hours ago, Scrapiron said: Second the HE3, but I’ll admit I haven’t fished with an Elite AGS. rangerjockey Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 Didn't you say the Fury was better than the Tatula .? Quote

I agree with above ^, but would take the expride over the imx Pro all day long and I’m a loomis guy. That being said I haven’t fished the tatula elites Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 20, 2019 Super User Posted July 20, 2019 Why do you all commit on rods you know nothing about? Tell me what the op means by reaction vs bottom contact lures? Buzz baits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits; square bills, lipless, deep divers, swim jigs and Scroungers, top water, jerk baits, structure spoons, frogs...? Tom Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted July 20, 2019 Super User Posted July 20, 2019 My only comment here is, to the original poster, do not let the fact that you have some decent rods that work for you interfere with any upgrade issues you might have in the back of your head. You want reaction bait rods? IMO a perfect spinnerbait rod isn't the same as a perfect square bill rod, neither of which is the same as a perfect deep diving crank bait rod. Then there are swim bait rigs, frog rigs, top water rigs and I'm certain we're missing many others. The best advice I can offer is to get as many different "perfect" rigs for whatever reaction baits you want to throw as your conscience and your disposable income will allow. If it is in the back of your mind that there is such a thing as a $300 all purpose reaction bait rod - well there really isn't for me, but there might be for you, I don't know. Quote

I have a couple of his rods, they're great. The owner was recently diagnosed with cancer, and he made a special run of rods to raise funds for his medical costs. They're only $170 (originally $230) and I'd argue that the blank is on par with IMX. Good cause and great price Quote

Tom i have 2 of the 7foot medium moderate for cranks topwater and jerkbait , 7'1 heavy fast for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits , 7'1 mhxf, and the 7'4 frog rod. Dobyns daiwa megabass kistler... no St.croix 13 duckett they don't make good rods Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 21, 2019 Super User Posted July 21, 2019 What model is the 7'1" MHXF rod? That is the only bottom contact rod you listed. Let's focus on 1 rod at a time. Tom Quote

I See Kistler H3's are on sale at TW and they have a rod matching yours that is litghter weight that should work for a good bottom contact rod. Tom Quote
