waymont Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 Years ago when I only fished out of a canoe with a partner up front I only used 6’ rods to prevent cramping the boat. when I changed boats ? I bought all 6’6” up to 7’ rods. At the beginning of this season I broke out my old Loomis IMX 723c. i forgot how accurate casting this rod is. It’s so light I can barely feel it too. I’ve been casting under trees and perfectly between logs and catching lots of fish because of it. Anyone else fishing short rods? 1 Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted July 19, 2019 Super User Posted July 19, 2019 Most of my rods are 6'. I have 6 baitcasting in that length I use quite a bit. I have a couple of 6' spinning rods. I have 1 baitcaster and 2 spinning rods in 6'6" that I use. Quote
The Bassman Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I've got a Loomis 722c GL3 and 723c IMX. I also slightly (1.5") shortened the handles and added a nice butt cap. Wonderful, timeless rods. Quote

Super User GreenPig Posted July 19, 2019 Super User Posted July 19, 2019 I took my Revo ALX off a 7'11" heavy and mounted it on a 5'6" medium rod to go creek fishing. Pinpoint accuracy with a 1/4 oz spinnerbait. I really had a great time with that baby rod. Gonna invest in a few more. 1 Quote
tbone1993 Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 Have a 6'6 loomis crankbait rod and I can cast 1.0s and small cranks between boat docks with ease. Sometimes its nice to get under 7ft. That being said I've messed around with a baitcaster on a 5'6 rod and it felt a little bit awkward to toss around. Bait could have been too big and the reel wasnt a feather weight either. Quote

PourMyOwn Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I still carry a 5'6" Bass Pro Boron rod in the trunk of my car. It's the rod I learned to throw a baitcaster with, way back in 1988. With a modern reel, it is pretty good at tossing small cranks. 1 Quote
crypt Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 still use my 6" team daiwas from way back when all the time. Quote
Big-Bass Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I have a Fenwick Boron X 6' Pistol Grip that I picked up and love it. Wonder what that rod is worth? Quote
Junger Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I have a 6' M/F Cabela's Tourney Trail just sitting around, I think I'll put a reel on it and take it out for a whirl this evening....this thread inspired me! 2 Quote

I did the same thing. Grabbed a 'cheap' reel and put it on my old Ambassadeur 6' M/M rod. See how I like a M/M for crank and jerkbaits before buying a better quality setup next Yule. Quote
Timberwolf530 Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I have a 6 footer with a pistol grip that I've been dying to get back into the rotation. My next reel is going to be a Tatula SV for skipping, and I'm going to pair it with that rod. I'm kind of excited to get that combo going. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted July 19, 2019 Super User Posted July 19, 2019 Why yes, yes I do . My favorite setup is my 1000 CI4+ paired with a 5'9" MLF Premier. And yes, I purposely cut the rod down from 6' to 5'9". Just prefer how it handles all around. 6' casting rod, which I don't use much now (sons do) is what I caught my PB on. I've cut down (butt end) one of my 6'6" spinning and a casting rod (both Carbonlites). Not sure I like the shorter butt end as much as I thought I would, but they're effectively 6'3" now. Fishing from a kayak, short rods are just my preference. 2 Quote
