Looking for a short frog rod for medium to heavy cover

HI all,

I am currently running the Okuma TCS 7'3 heavy (1/2oz -2 oz) as my frog rod. What i have noticed is that the rod is a bit underpowered when I am fighting bigger fish or fish in heavy cover.

The ideal specs for such rod for me would be:

* Max length 7 foot
* fast/extra fast tip in order to be able to throw lighter frogs and still be able to 'walk-the-dog' them
* well balanced with a 6.5+ oz reel
* robust

I’ve been using my Dobyns Fury 664 with great success. But no fish over 5lbs in medium cover. Not sure how big of fish you’re talking about or how heavy the cover is for you. I like a shorter frog rod too. It great for casting and working frogs.

Daiwa has a few short frog rods in their JDM Black Label lineup but I have never found much info on them.  Megabass has a new rod in the JDM Destroyer line called the “Lillypad Survivor”, it’s a 6’7” P5, so it might not be meant for heavy cover, but could be worth a look.   

 

I have also been on the hunt for a super short frog rod but have not had a lot of luck.

im  using the tatula elite 6'9'' heavy skipping rod that i use for frogging. its  sweet.

I use a Daiwa Tatula 7-1 Heavy and works great for what you describe.  I’m 5-9 and don’t find it too long of a rod to walk the dog.  As far as throwing lighter frogs (but with a strong backbone) also check out the ALX Toadface.  Longer than what you want at 7-2 but the tip is MH for throwing lighter stuff and the mid section/butt is rated Heavy to get the fish out of thicker slop.  Talk to Alex at ALX, he might be able to modify the Toadface more to your liking... great guy.  

 

Both longer rods than your max, but have some great features.

I have no idea if it’s good or not, but I do know that the 13 Fishing Muse Black series has a 6’5” H/F rod specifically for a shorter frog rod. I’m guessing you could find a review on it. 

Also I have no problem with the rod you use for frogging, that rod is my frog rod as well and it does not seem underpowered at all. I love how versatile it is as well. I don’t fish insanely heavy cover here in Ma, but I fish really thick pads sometimes.
