BassSam5 Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 I’m looking to get a new spinning combo that’s good for all applications. I’d like to use it for drop shots, Ned rigs, wacky rigs and shaky heads. 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted July 15, 2019 Super User Posted July 15, 2019 First major question. What's your budget? Quote

Super User Darren. Posted July 15, 2019 Super User Posted July 15, 2019 Yes. Please answer the budget question, would tip the suggestions by a large margin . Personally: Rod: 6' (max 6'6") M or ML spinning rod. Probably St. Croix Premier (ML). Reel: 1000 size Shimano Stradic CI4+, would def consider Daiwa equivalent. Line: 10 or 15# braid (PP Super Slick 8) Leader: 6-10 pound test fluoro or hybrid 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 15, 2019 Super User Posted July 15, 2019 Shaky and Ned are 2 of my main fishing techniques. I can’t see how you can adequately do all that with 1 setup. Where I fish you get twice as many bites on the Ned rig with 6# fluorocarbon as any other line. The rod needs to be a ml or l. The reel can be a 1000 size. You might be able to dropshot with it but you need a beefier setup for shaky, at least a medium with a 2500 series reel. The difference in hook size size alone would keep one of me Ned setups from working with shaky. i think you need to be looking for 2 setups. 1 Quote
Rip_lipz Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 If I could only pick one spinning rod it would be a 6' 10" st Croix medium with a Pflueger president. This a good set up for around 180 dollars. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted July 17, 2019 Super User Posted July 17, 2019 IMO the best spinning setup for the money right now is the Lew's Mach II metal speed spin combo. It's on sale at Dick's for $99 down from $140 IM8 rod with Winn Grips 10 bearing drive, aluminum framed reel, with Winn Grip knob. Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 I use two spinning setups to accomplish my finesse needs, and feel pretty good about it with the 150~ dollar budget I put on myself. 13 *** MLF 6'10" with a Daiwa Fuego LT2500D-XH spooled up with 12# braid with 6, 8, and 10# fluoro for dropshotting and Ned. 13 *** MF 7'1" with a Daiwa Fuego LT 2500D-XH spooled up with 12# braid with 8, 10, and 12# fluoro for weightless plastics wacky or Texas as well as shakyheads. Certainly not the -BEST- spinning setups, but for 70 dollar rods and 75 dollar reels I'm very impressed. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted July 17, 2019 Super User Posted July 17, 2019 Probably my St. Croix Avid Rods with Shimano Stradic (older series, don’t on newer ones over the last few years) or Symetre reels. Have a real nice spinning setup for crank baits. Abu Garcia Winch reel on a Abu Veritis Winch Spinning rod. Soft sweet tip to that setup. But to each his own. I’d like to think all my setup are pretty decent. And get the job done. Quote

If you can buy a nice med. setup this year and get a ML setup for next season. You will use them both for what you are trying to throw. You might find that an X-Fast set up is not needed either. I would not buy a rod untouched. You’ll get 1000 good suggestions on your post but get to touch enough rods and you’ll find the one that has the right feel to you. Good luck, sounds fun. Quote

Matt_3479 Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 Right now, I’ve been really enjoying my nrx 852s paired with a stradic ci4+ As well as my expride. Little cheaper then the nrx, glx and even the imx pro, but I feel they fish and feel way above there price range. One of the best feeling rods in hand, great looking rod, and sensitive as hell!! gilkeybr Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 I recently got a Dobyns Champion Extreme 741. Its a very sweet rod. Super duper sensitive and can really sling finesse weight baits. Looking forward to catching something big on it. Paired up with a Daiwa Exist 2506. I think its a very sweet combo. But maybe out shined by the Conquest/Stella pairing mentioned above Quote
Tizi Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 I am currently using a Daiwa Tatula XT 7' Medium with Dawia Fuego LT 3000 reel. I spool mine with 6 lb Sufix Siege Cammo . This combo cost my $79.99 for rod and $74.99 for reel. Very good for $155. 1 Quote
Randy Price Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 For the money I would get a 6'6" St. Croix Avid MF with a Shimano Nasci with 10lb Seguar Smackdown and that would be a VERY good all purpose rod and reel. Quote

Me to, but mine has 15lb seaguar smackdown, I don't use it for ned rigs or shakeyhead though... For ned rigs I would go with the a Megabass Flyssa and Daiwa Certate LT. For shakeyhead I use a NRX 852c with a Shimano Metanium. With that said the Stella is the best Spinning reel I have ever used and I've used quite a few high end spinning reels though out the years...
