Fishing_FF Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 Rather than start a tangent thread under one of the iCAST topics, figured I would post the information I was able to obtain here. The new Plano Edge Series that was released this week at iCAST is limited to 10 specific utility boxes. The 10 are: 1) 3600 Standard 2) 3700 Thin 3) 3700 Standard 4) 3700 Deep 5) 3700 Terminal Tackle 6) 3700 Jig/Blade Bait 7) 3700 Crankbait/Jerkbait 8 ) Extra Large Crakbait Rectangle Box 9) Hanging Spinnerbait Rectangle Box 10) Clamshell Packaging/Tool Utility Box I was told Chris Russel shot a video at iCast, showing each type and style. However, when the rep and I were talking, we were unable to find it listed. When I am sent the link, I'll include it here. I told the rep that I was sad to hear there was only a single size available in the 3600 series available. He fully understood why a smaller size is valuable to someone backpack fishing, using a kayak, or co-angling, but he was unable to talk about future products in development or why only the 3600 standard is being produced at this time. When I asked if it had anything to do with a 3600 size silicone-style grabbing box by a company called Gruv that has some patents on their products, there was no comment. For now, those wanting a 3600 size Plano Edge series utility box, the standard size is the only option. 1 1 Quote

Le-sigh - I was hoping for 3620s and 3650s...guess I'll have to keep doing what I've been doing - tossing desiccant packs in my boxes. Quote

So I guess we can expect the $7 ~ 3700 boxes to suddenly become $19.99 too. That's some weak salad Plano. ? A-Jay TW has three 3700 size models for $25 & $35 respectively. A-Jay 1 1 Quote

He had questions about the 3600 series line as well since that is 71% of his Plano utility box sales (yes, he had sales numbers to talk with certain vendors). They got talking about the MRSP about specific boxes he was looking at stocking. I honestly don't know what the price of the 3700 crankbait/jerkbait box will be as he isn't considering stocking either of the crankbait boxes. From the ones that were talked about, there will be some sticker shock with the Edge Series as the cheapest box is $19.99, compared to the plain jane, no tech same size box that costs about $5-$6. The new one-handed latch, the rechargeable desiccant, waterproof gaskets, VCI coating, and even the labeling space all drive up the cost. Quote

A-Jay Basically you can fit $100 worth of lipless cranks in a $50 box. That’s a tough pill for me to swallow. Quote

Same here, going to keep using desiccants. My kayak crate has a lid, so I throw a rechargeable desiccant pack or two that I bought off Amazon in the crate with the Plano boxes, which are a mix of plain-Jane no-tech 3600s. I have another desiccant in my backpack for walking the banks or co-angling. Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted July 12, 2019 Global Moderator Posted July 12, 2019 They have 5 for pre order on TW. The terminal box is $49.99. Here ya go. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/searchresults.html#Plano edge Quote
KDW96 Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 They do look nice, but not at that price. Ill stick with my waterproof 3700s. I use them because they are built better. Havent had issues with latches, etc. Ones for treble baits, get 1/8in holes drilled around the sides, and 2 holes in each divider, 2 holes under each section on the bottom. And my label maker, makes nice yellow easy to read labels. All this at over half the cost. And i have never had any rust issues either. Quote
Harold Scoggins Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 The one box I'm really interested in, Jig/Blade box, they don't have for pre-order yet. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted July 12, 2019 Super User Posted July 12, 2019 At these prices I have to wonder if Plano has been bought out by Megabass? Quote
punch Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 I think Bass Mafia's success has shown that there's a market for 'higher end' tackle boxes. Plano clearly is responding. I do want to check these things out in person. They look interesting. Quote
Fishing_FF Posted July 14, 2019 Author Posted July 14, 2019 I do think that Bass Mafia pricing has an influence on the Plano Edge pricing. I was being sarcastic when said, "The new one-handed latch, the rechargeable desiccant, waterproof gaskets, VCI coating, and even the labeling space all drive up the cost." If you look at the pricing of each tech, it doesn't add up. Example for the 3600 box: Pro Latch Utility Box 3620 - $5.39 Waterproof StowAway 3640 - $8.99 (difference $3.60) Rustrictor 3600 - $6.29 (difference $0.90) Plano Edge 3600 STD - $19.99 (difference $14.60) This means I am suppose to believe there is $10.10 in R&D and material for the one-handed latch, rechargeable desiccant, and the label space? Probably not, but when the Plano Edge is compared to some other "higher end" tackle boxes the picture comes together as the medium size Lure Lock is $14.99 and a Bass Mafia 3600 is $12.99 standard or $18.99 for a clear view lid. Here is the link for the video shot at iCAST by Chris Russell showing the Plano Edge series: Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted July 14, 2019 Super User Posted July 14, 2019 Besides the ridiculous pricing, these things look like they'll weigh a bit more than the originals. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 14, 2019 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 14, 2019 Actually it's the opposite. I held them at ICAST and was surprised at how light they were. And the one hand latch? Yup, easy as advertised. I asked about the label system - what if you need to change the name? You can use Windex to clean off the writing...so the label is reusable. Quote
punch Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 Plano is going to sell a TON of these things. I think people who want 'higher end' accessories and organizational items is a really under served market. Quote

I'm sure these are nice boxes but at these prices they are most likely only selling to tournament guys and not weekend warriors and since the weekend warriors make up a much larger percentage of anglers across the country the plain, waterproof and rustrictor boxes will most likely outsell these boxes 2 or even 3 to 1 IMO. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted July 14, 2019 Super User Posted July 14, 2019 Tackle companies are finding that guys will spend more money on gear than they used to think. The huge profit margin on a box that will only cost a few cents more to produce than the other boxes has to be very attractive. I doubt you will see many brick and mortar stores stocking them. I’ve been buying Plano utility boxes at their outlet store for years and have never paid more than $2. The new boxes look nice, but not enough for me to pay twenty times what I’m paying now. 1 Quote
Harold Scoggins Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 Say what you may, I'm dropping some coin on these boxes. Quote

You need to protect those lures so they are in pristine condition when you donate them to the bottom of the lake. 1 Quote

There are already fancy ones out here, at least overseas. “Meiho Versus” is a jdm brand and there is a really high in German box system whose name escapes me, but hard-core wargaming nerds rave about them for holding all of their little cardboard tanks and infantry units. Super User FishTank Posted July 14, 2019 Super User Posted July 14, 2019 I believe these will sell well initially. I do agree that $50 is a stretch but they will be on sale at some point. I think it will be hard to judge the long term sales on these boxes though. There have been several over the years that have come and gone... Falcon FTO's (my favorite), Shimano high end boxes, Plano's Flipsider, Lakewood, etc. I have a feeling that these will be in the same category a few years from now. 1 Quote
