I use braid for those type baits. Mono has the advantage for baits you want to wait a little longer to set the hook on, to be sure the fish takes the bait completely. just to clarify, I did see in your original post you stated the advantages of mono when using treble hooks.? I just quoted the portion that I was referencing. Because of my distaste for mono I will use a rod with more of a bend with treble hook lures 2 Quote

Overall I personally agree they are more difficult to catch, which to me is one of the reasons KVD is an amazing angler as well as BP both cut their teeth smallie fishing finding the big schools and now can usually find largemouth with ease Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 11, 2019 Super User Posted July 11, 2019 Giant world record size bass can be caught from a shallow oxbow lake without a replenishing food source (Montgomery lake was so shallow it turned into a meadow). Largemouth bass are toughest fish that swims, they can live out of water. Big bass are smart bass. Fishing rods are sensitive. Fluorocarbon line is stronger, more abrasion resistant, better knot strength and stretches less then Nylon monofilament line. Florida has bigger bass then any other state. The Great Lakes have bigger smallmouth bass then TVA lakes. California Spotted bass record isn't a Spotted bass. Color doesn't mater when bass fishing. The majority of giant bass are caught between 10A to 2P. Tom 4 Quote

It just means the line has been labeled misleadingly and is probably thicker than other lines marked similarly. I agree. However, IMHO, it is higher compensate for the loss made at the knot. Some really “over do” it. This is an arbitrary example. Take 10# mono and tie it to a hook with a palomar knot. Let’s say that the palomar retains 90% of the line’s strength. Well, you’re effectively fishing with 9# test now, not 10#. I think this is why some line makers make the lines break at slightly higher than the rating on the spool or box, to compensate for that loss. To the topic: The creation of the perception to think you need to have the latest and cutting edge gear. Baits, equipment. I’m not against companies marketing as such. I get they got to make their money. I don’t play that game, and I don’t bite hook, line and sinker. 1 Quote
CrankFate Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 d**n, I agree with a lot of the disagrees here. Here are my Big disagrees. -Very expensive rods are better / Stiff sensitive graphite catches more fish. -Braid is harder to cast. -Straight braid will slip. -Bass stop biting when it gets very hot. -Bass go deep when it’s very hot. -Bass like to eat bluegills. -Green Pumpkin Senkos. 1 Quote

papajoe222 Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 #1 Fluorocarbon has very little stretch and sinks. Therefore, you get more depth using fluoro vs. mono. Your crank may run a little deeper using the same pound test, but it's because of the smaller line diameter, not because it sinks. #2 Mono is outdated as there are much better lines produced today. Yea, that's why almost every line manufacturer still offers at least one mono. Maybe they do that just for us old guys that love using mono???? #3 Early morning and dusk are prime times for top water. Maybe for the guys that put them down the rest of the time. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted July 12, 2019 Super User Posted July 12, 2019 #1 I prefer cheap/budget rods/reels. I think it is up to circumstance of each individuals, you buy what you can afford but don’t trash other on opposite end. #2 I need to spool new line every trip/quarter/season. #3 rods for each techniques known to man. #4 bass fisherman is the coolest. Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 12, 2019 Global Moderator Posted July 12, 2019 That I MUST try a ned rig . My buddies go through bags and bags of them (not because fish tear them up, because they get stuck on bottom) out of the back of my boat and still don't have any more success than regular plastic worms. I did try one once, got it stuck on bottom. If you are supposed to swim the bait off the bottom, then I'll just use a grub or cheaper worm 5 Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 13, 2019 Super User Posted July 13, 2019 That live bait fishing is unethical! That more can be done with casting reels than spinning, lol. That eating bass is the unpardonable sin of the fishing world. That dingers catch more fish than senkos. ( good vrs excellent imo. ) That jigs are The end all- do all of bass fishing. That fishing in eel grass does not produce fish. That leaders are ever necessary. That ugly sticks are bad rods. That Florida strain largemouths are harder to catch. That mono is not the best all around line. 1 Quote

I freely admit they do eat bluegill and anything else they can get. They're equal opportunity predators. You can see people catching bass on live bluegill on YouTube. But my dad and I used to clean and eat almost everything we caught. Every time I ever cut into the stomach of a bass it either had shad or minnows or nothing in its stomach. But I no longer cut into the stomachs of bass because I don't keep any for myself. I did catch a 1.5 pounder that had an 8" half-digested bass sticking out its throat once. Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 13, 2019 Super User Posted July 13, 2019 I’m sure some of it depends on the forage base. I have no shad in my home lake and have not caught any shiners for several years now, so various types of bream are the main forage base. Interestingly , the bass seem to like copperhead ( copper nose to some of y’all) bluegills the best out of several varieties . They seem to like redbreast bream the least .There are lots of minnows, which are good for the little bass to grow on. I have caught a few crawfish in the trap but I don’t think there’s a large population. So bream are “ what’s for dinner “ around here, and the occasional frog. 1 Quote
Glaucus Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 Here I've noticed that when bluegill are the primary food source, the bass are skinnier. Quote
