Zanza7 Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 ** Update with pictures at near end of thread. ** SOLVED! - My rod was an ultra-light and didn't have the umph to consistently set the hook Take a look at these photos. I caught one bass on the 2nd cast here and it was about 1.5 lbs - decent fish for a retention pond. Then I got about 5 more bites, some stayed on for 3 seconds, one stayed on for 5 seconds. After the 2nd or 3rd missed hook up I got even more patient in waiting before setting it. I am using Gamasatku (sp?) 4 Extra Wide Gap hooks and they are super sharp. I have it skin rigged weedless. Is it chance? Does the before and after picture help any? I think it looks like they werent getting it all in their mouth. Quote
JediAmoeba Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 It usually mean a fish (albeit, usually a small one) grabbed the tail and you jerked or pulled it out of it's mouth. Sometimes this is a result of premature "jerking". Quote
BadContrakt Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 Yeah. Chance. Your rigging looks spot on. Just like it should be. It's down, simply, to the fish not fully mouthing it and/or you setting the hook in the perfect way to pull it out of their mouth rather than in it... For example.. If the fish isn't hungry and is just half-mouthing the bait on the left side of his mouth and you're hook setting to the left, away from the fish, rather than to the right, toward the fish... You could be doing exactly the right hookset to pull it out of their mouth... Tail grabbing will do it too. It's usually smaller fish that do that to your bait. Big hungry fish will get that whole worm in their mouth with one good inhale. Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted July 10, 2019 Super User Posted July 10, 2019 Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ What type & size line are you using and what's your rod & reel ? Sweet kicks btw A-Jay Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 10, 2019 Super User Posted July 10, 2019 It means the bass, large or smaller, had the stick worm in it's mouth when you set the hook and common occurrence the indicates the hook didn't penetrate the mouth tissues. To solve that problem try using another style hook, pegging or rigging technique to prevent the worm from sliding down the hook shank. Wacky rigging works very good for Senko /larger diameter stick worms. Owner CPS hooks Twistlock Light 5167 eliminates worms sliding down because the spring holds the of the worm to the hook eye. Pegging the nose of the worm through the hook eye with a Peg-It or 50 lb piece of mono line that goes sideways through the worm nose, Glenn has a vedio on this. Tom 1 Quote

Sweet kicks btw A-Jay That was a 7' ultra light rod, size 500 reel, 8lb mono. It was all I had in my car when I decided to try out this little pond! Quote

Could be a little too light. A-Jay 1 Quote

Never thought about that, makes sense! Im going to try and go there again today and use a medium power rod but it rains every day here in Florida during the summer. I'll post the results on a firmer rod. 1 Quote
