Kastking Speed Demon Frog Rod

Does anyone have experience with this rod? I see that they will be going on a prime sale next week and wanted to pick one up. It states it is rated to 4 oz, but most frog rods I have seen are up to 2oz. I am actually going to be using this for ocean fluke fishing and if it really is like a broomstick then great I can use it for bucktailing.

I haven't seen many reviews on any of the speed demon rods but my interest is indeed piqued. I would love to try a few that are not bottom contact rods. Id imagine they fish every bit as good as a $200 rod. Most of the reviews you find are from sponsors so of course they are going to say its the greatest thing since sliced bread. A 4oz rated frog rod probably wont have a fast enough tip to easily walk the dog bit who knows... Let us know when you get one. I think its worth the gamble.

What lure rating are you looking for?  I suspect it will mostly match its rating, it's gonna be a stout, stiff rod.  If you look at the pro tournament speed demon series, their frog rod looks more appropriate at 1+oz.

Bass series, at 1-4oz, that cuts out a lot of frogs from min rating and the average frog isn't 2 oz...not sure what they are doing there.  It's like a short, medium swimbait rod.  It certainly would be nice to hear from someone who has one.

If that's on sale from $80, that's gonna be a steal...but not for froggin IMO.  And KK says the rating is correct...so if you want a 1-4oz, it looks like it may be just that.

yeah i may give it a try, but just odd that it is such a stiff rod even compared to all the other frog rogs in their other line up. ultimately if that is true then it will work in my favor in the ocean

Don't most frog weigh less than 1 oz?  would that rod work well with .5 ounce frog?

Yep, the heaviest one I have is a 7/8oz Booyah Toadrunner.

Thats a swimbait Bammy rig rod. I have a few KK rods but their ratings are a little on the heavy than actual side. Their Royale Legend Heavy is more MH.

I don't know that rod, but it's either a frog rod, or fishes as labeled, not both. I fish inshore with flipping sticks a lot, I find they do better at jigging and fighting fish than frog or swim bait rods. Quincy is for Haddock and winter flounder, no?...

quincy is for winter flounder haha but i go down to RI about an hr and 15 min drive to fish off block island. i am hoping it fishes as labeled and i can bucktail 4-6 oz bucktails for the fluke. for my lighter fluke rod i do use a 7'6" flipping stick for my 2-3 oz bucktails

I have a few Speed Demon Pro rods and really like them but the frog rod isn't one of them. Those specs seem way off.

just a thought but i wonder if they just cut down the flipping stick from 8' ft to 7'2" I could imagine those ratings to be true then..haha

I have 4 speed demon pro rods. They are nice rods for the price,

 I don't like the technique specific designation of each rod. 

I would personally just like to know the length, power, action, and number of eyelets on the rod.

One persons worm rod might be an others, fluke rod.

I mentioned the worm rod, because I think it is too light for that application. It does however make an awesome fluke rod.

I must be in the minority, because they seem to be selling a lot of rods.

If you want a broomstick I would suggest an Abu Garcia Veritas 3.0 Heavy rod. Not that expensive at $100 and Abu rods run heavier than their rating to begin with so with a Heavy from them you'd probably be able to land a tuna...lol.

Not to derail this this thread, but I have a gen1 heavy veritas. I saw a fish eat my jig in shallow water, set the hook and it came flying out of the water at me. I actually apologized to the fish. You are right about landing a tuna with it.

i see the 7'9" heavy that is rated up to 3 oz. that could probably work. i have the kastking ordered and will get back to you on how accurate that lure rating is. i have a tatula flipping stick and a dobyns sierra 735 that i can give some comparisons too for heavy sticks

so i have it in hand...initial impressions appears to be that it can cast 4 oz, but its at its limit. it could probably cast a 1 oz frog...but i would rather have a softer rod for most frogs unless im fishing in the thickest thickest stuff. on the other hand, this seems to be a very well made rod for the price and will see how the sensitive it is on monday when i bucktail with it in 80ft of water

As others have said many times... Kastking is a marketing company not a fishing company... which leads me to believe that yes they do sell a ton of rods. They just don't sell a lot of rods to people here maybe because we tried their reels and they are junk. These rods are new and people still have a bad taste in their mouth. Thanks for letting us know the rods are indeed good. You are the first I have seen with one and I too would like to check one out. The technique designation is another marketing tool that you see with most bass rod makers. It allows someone new to the industry a guide for what they want to do and also make them think they need 8 setups to catch bass... which most of us do

Care to share your personal experience to back up that statement? Or are you just saying that because you've read a few bad reviews?

 

If you've never tried them, then...well. It's easy to find bad reviews on nearly every product - just look on Amazon.  Simply repeating those negative reviews when you've never tried them doesn't seem to be much help.

 

My .02 - the fishing industry is a cutthroat industry.  It wouldn't be a stretch at all to discover that many of the "bad" reviews are contrived by competitors.  So unless you have personal experience with the product, take the "bad" reviews with a grain of salt.

 

That said, if you DO have any issues, well that's what warranties are for, right?  And all KastKing products have warranties.  Although I haven't had to use them yet, and I have 4 of their reels.

Agree with you @Glenn, I have a few of their products (Stealth bc, SharkyII spinner on Perigee rods), and haven't had an issue with them yet. Caught me plenty of fish on them. Just purchased 3 of their Royal Legend BC rods (which will replace my hodgepodge of different name brand rods on my boat matched up with my Lews reels) and a Speed Demon BC. I think along the line as you with these bad reviews, there might be a few legit complaints, but I think more are competitors or competitor "Fan Bois" bashing for no good reason. Do I think their reels are better than my Lews, no but they are great for the budget minded fisherman. As for me, I use them for my bank fishing excursions. If they get banged up I don't have to spend a ton of money to replace them.

so wasn't able to use the rod much, since did not use bucktails more than 3 oz. but did cast it around a bit and it seems okay. since we are on the topic of reels, i will say for the price they are decent, but too much play, tolerances are not that great, but overall a good deal for the price (used an assassin). the thing is i can get a diawa fuego or a lews speed spool for not much more on sale( which you usually can find) that makes the reels not as great of a deal. i will report back to this thread after using the speed demon rod more

just wanted to update. for an 80 dollar its pretty good. has decent sensitivity and when it loads up on a fish its pretty smooth throughout the rod. i will say that it is not the crispest, but that i think is to be expected at this price point. this may have just been my rod, but the hook keeper bent out really quickly. probably was a fluke...

The hook keepers on mine bent easily as well. I absolutely hate the location of the hook keepers too. I don't know who thought putting them on the back of the rod below the reel was a good idea, but they're wrong.
