Good Largemouth lures recommendations

Well, it's been about 40 years since I last did any serious fishing.  And, for the past month,  I've been going to a small lake and a bunch of different ponds doing some bank fishing.  I used to consider myself the world's worst fisherman, but not any more.  I've been catching fish, not many but enough to relinquish the aforementioned title.

 

I've been using a lot of topwater baits and I do like fishing topwater.  Been using frogs, mostly.  But, I've discovered the Whopper Plopper and that's been my most successful lure.  Recently caught a 4lb largemouth (by far the largest fish I've ever caught) and a couple not too much smaller than that.

 

But, I feel I should start working other baits...baits other than topwater.  So, I am asking you guys for some recommendations.  I have some Rapala crankbaits and some Mepps inline spinners (these have caught me a couple of fish).  I even have some soft plastic stuff, but I am not sure how to rig them or how to fish them.  I guess I'll head to YouTube for that.

 

Can any of you enlighten me with your recommendations?

You like to cast and retreive so I would add a chatterbait to your lure selection.

Good lure to fish underwater like you do with the Whopper Plopper on the surface plus adding a verity of soft plastic trailers.

Rapala DT's are very good in the green colors and live river shad, chatterbaits in greens or black matching trailers (grubs and tail parts of worms work very well), spinnerbaits are always worth a try for LMB (fish are very sensitive to color with spinnerbaits, based on my experience.  Sometimes light colors and chartreuse, sometime black is all they will hit).

I would get some soft plastic craw or creature style baits, some soft plastic straight tail worms, and a couple skirted bass jigs.  Keep colors simple, mostly natural like green pumpkin, watermelon/red flake, or plain black or black/blue.

Get some extra wide gap offset hooks for Texas rigging the soft plastics.  4/0 is a good all-around size that will work with almost any style and size of soft plastic bait.  Definitely check out some videos on Texas rigging, and working a jig.

Swim jigs (skirted jigs- see sponsor Siebert Outdoors in right margin) with tail parts of worms or swimbaits for trailers are very effective (and versatile) for LMB.  When LMB are active, they hit them on the fall.  After they get to bottom, sometimes the fish want them dragged slowly, sometimes hopped, experiment to  find what they want.  Greens and black/blue/purple/blue craw.

Trick worm, Fluke, and Senko are three that consistently produce for me. The Ned Rig is a good lure also.

You have topwater, so fish mid and bottom with the next things you learn.

 

Texas Rigged Soft Plastic (worm, craw, fluke, doesn't really matter). (bottom-mid water)

White bladed jig with a matching small trailer, lightest you can cast (1/4-1/2oz). (mid to bottom)

 

Fish bottom in a few styles with the texas rig (drag bottom, and hop bottom)

Fish middle and bottom with bladed jig (cast and swim it back...alternatively cast and let it sink, hop it back with rod).

I have one rigging and essentially 4 styles of baits I rely on. I rig 90 percent of my plastics on slider spider heads, both the pro with stouter hook and the lighter hook model. 

 

My top 2 creature baits are the Rage Menace and Gambler Ugly Otter. Both great baits, the Menace is a bit more durable.

 

The other 2 are a 3 to 5 inch single tail grub, I prefer Kalins, but they are many good options out there. Lastly a tube is still an amazing bait in the 3 to 5 inch range. Brand doesn’t really matter. 

 

I will list a Ned rig, but for the way I target largemouth I don’t use it much, that is my river bait for smallmouth primarily.

This year the Fat Ika has been the most universal bait I have used

It is the perfect weight to be used throughout the water column a slow fall has caught me more LM than the last 5 yrs combined

I've bought them based on @roadwarrior posts but i have not caught a bass on them yet which is almost unbelievable so i just keep on throwing senkos and keep catching bass. You got any tips on how to fish them?

What's in the article above is simple and laid out really clearly, and you'll get comfortable with bottom presentations and catch fish while you are doing it.

 

I'd add a few things:

1) Rig the Fat Ika with the tentacles towards the line.

2) if you are going to buy hooks, get owner centering pin hooks in 3/0 light wire for the senko. Made for the senko, baits last longer and the shimmy on the fall is nice. And Owner 4/0 Wide Gap Plus for the Ika. Neither of these baits need weight.

 

After you get comfortable and successful with the retrieve in the article, start focusing on casting/pitching the same lures to very specific spots - weed edges, laydowns, anything that might hold a bass. As an example, I've had great results casting a senko on top of a grass mat, dragging across it, and just barely rolling it over the edge so it can fall straight down. Everything under the mat is waiting to see if it looks tasty.

 

Then try bringing the senko back in the middle of the water column like a fluke - twitch-twitch-pause. If you do that where you can see it in the water you'll get a better feel for how to twitch it and how it darts around. 

 

After that you can experiment with adding weight and changing plastics. Texas rig Rage Craw and Zoom Trick worms are great places to go next, with 1/4 oz bullet weight. 

 

Since you are on the bank, if you decide to try the chatterbaits and spinnerbaits mentioned above, consider getting weedless versions since you don't have a good way to get them unstuck. And don't forget to put a trailer on them.

Caught my very first sauger Texas rigging a soft plastic crawdad with a bullet sinker.  It was about 12-13 inches, weighed about a pound (I think).  Scary teeth on those guys!  Good thing I had a fish gripper.

congrats ... i've caught a turtle, more than one goggle eye, bluegill, catfish and shellcracker with a zoom trick worm ...when marsh fishing for bass have caught redfish and flounder with the trick worm...

 

read what you can here (articles) and watch the videos ... the best site on the internet to pick up ideas that work to fish t rig worms that catch bass ... and other ways to fish ...
