Wanting to put together a flipping/putching spinning rod. Not wanting to break the bank though. What gear ratio and what size and action pole do you recommend? I have a st croix 7"6' med fast action and a gloomis 7" med fast laying around that i thought about using. For some reason i feel like i need more then that. Any opinions?? TIA.

I have a Dobyns Sierra 735. 7'3 mag heavy paired with Shimano SLX reel. The combo was around $250. I love Dobyns rods.

Any opinion on what gear ratio the reel should be? I've read the faster the better for this setup. Is that true?

I prefer a high speed reel for pitching or flipping.

I want to pick up line as fast as possible, so I can quickly pitch to the next target.

plus if a fish grabs your bait and makes a dash at the boat it is easier to catch up with it and set the hook.

What type of rod do you prefer?

Dobyns fury 734 or 735.

If cover is heavy I go with the 735. Usually jigs or creature baits.

If I am pitching weed edges I usually use the 734. Usually worms.

I pair both of these up with a diawa tatula sv. With the 8.1 to 1 gear ratio.
