Recommended Hook For 10” Ribbontails

Have some 10” Culprits, Ol’Monsters, and Powerworms but wasn’t sure if a 4/0 Offset Gamma G-Lock was the best choice. Any recommendations?

Depends entirely on how thick the worms are.  I use 3/0 and 4/0 worm hooks on regular Culprits.  Fat Max gets an EWG or 6/0 usually.  Length of the worm is not nearly as important as leaving enough gap for bunching up an hooksets

A 4/0 will work, I use a 5/0 for that size. In fact one thing that works in a few lakes here during summer is an oversize shaky head. I make my own and for a 10" worm I use a 3/8oz head with a 5/0 hook and it works really well, most bites are at the head. I use the 10" Culprit original in red shad and the Berkley Power Worm 10" in blue fleck, if one isn't getting it done the other will.

For 10" worms, like a 10" Berkley Powerbait worm,  I like a regular gap as opposed to a wide gap or extra wide gap hook. Referring to page 296 of the BPS  2019 Master Catalog,  I like hooks K, L & M.  Offset round bend or O'Shaughnessy (otherwise known as a sproat) hooks.  VMC & Trokar make a similar style hook.   For 10" worms I use 5/0 hooks unless I'm out, which hasn't happened for a number of years now.

Running out of something is my biggest fear...which is why when I have 1 or 2 packs left of something I go buy 10 more.  Sigh.

The Owner Twistlock Light is my go to hook for ribbontail type worms. Either a 5/0 or 6/0 for the 10" baits. I find that the durability of the worms is increased with the threaded centering pin that's on it

Interesting.  I have some Owner Twistlock Lights that are still in the package.  I have assumed that worms would get tore up fast, so haven't used them yet. 

When I use screw on bullet weights, the worms won't last two fish...so I just assumed that a worm screwed in at the top would shred fast.  I'll have to try them out this weekend.  I have been perfectly happy with Owner 3/0 and 4/0 worm offset hooks, but I'll give the twistlock a shot

The screw in weights rip out super fast due to the weight pulling, the owner screwlock keepers give insane plastic life. I swap out every screwlock hook/jig I own to them.  

 

I can’t post it on my phone, but I have posted a pic here before of a Super Fluke rigged on a Owner twistlock. The hook and nose of the fluke are completely pulled through the middle of the plastic due to a pickerel smashing it.  Even turned inside out the screwlock held tight.

For 10” ribbon tail worms, I use only 1/0 or a 3/0 offset hook.

 

No need for anything larger

 

For 10” Maximus worms or 12” worms, I use 3/0 - 5/0 offset hooks

So why straight-shank offset for worms instead of EWG? I use 4/0 Gama EWGs for basically everything weighted and never really feel like I've whiffed on anything.

Just personal preference.  I like a lower profile.

I have thought about trying an Owner Twistlock for something like this but I have always been concerned that it would collect grass and other gunk on the head because of the design versus a standard t-rig. Am I wrong? If not I do not know why you wouldn't do this 24/7.

Gamakatsu EWG Monster in 5/0 is perfect for 10" worms. It's all I use. They're a little longer than a standard 5/0 EWG due to a longer shank near the eyelet.

It doesn't seem to collect anymore than a standard Texas rigged offset hook, at least in my experience. I'd definitely recommend picking up a pack... They seriously extend the life of the baits I use. They also make killer Texas rigged senko hooks

Depending on the front end dia I use Owner 5103 or 5167 4/0 or 5/0.

5167 Twist Lock Light doesn't seem to collect any debris on the worm nose, I usec8 mm glass tempered facet bead inbetween the hook and sliding painted brass or tungsten bullet weight. The light hook is a strong wire hook that doesn't flex the way I set hooks and fishing sparsh cover deep rock structure lakes with 12 lb FC usually during the day or 19 lb Armillo mono at night.

EWG hooks with large gap wire loop tend to flatten sideways inside the basses mouth and miss hook sets as result.
