j bab Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 July 2nd is the 10th anniversary of Manabu Kurita's world record catch. Here is a link to his Instagram post, but since many of you don't use that platform I'll share some of the pics here: 11 Quote

I would have liked to see Dottie be the record, but it wasn't caught per Cali regs. 1 Quote

At least Mac was honest enough to admit she wasn't caught according to the rules and regulations. 5 Quote

He didn't volunteer he snagged Dottie, shore anglers who witnessed the catch told the official weighing her that she was snagged, then the trio admitted the hook was outside the mouth. What a shame! Super User Team9nine Posted July 2, 2019 Super User Posted July 2, 2019 Kurita’s fish is the world record in my eyes; 22lbs. 4.97oz., easily 1 oz. heavier than the GA fish, but IGFA says a tie because of not being 2oz or more greater. Have other larger bass been landed? Dottie for sure and possibly the Lake Dixon fish come to mind. But snagging off a bed, intentional or not, shouldn’t count IMO, especially given the current ML controversy, and bathroom scales just don’t cut it. Have to side with Tom on this one. 2 Quote

Well, here in Tennessee , if I catch a 12# smallmouth it will be THE WORLD RECORD. 1 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted July 2, 2019 Super User Posted July 2, 2019 Kurita's world record bass was caught on a live bluegill and if he was in California the bass wouldn't be allowed because using live bluegill is also illegal here. I don't believe Kurita made much money because it was a live bait fish and that is unfortunate. No dought about it's weight the bass was scrutinized by lots of folks trying to disqualify the catch. The fact IGFA used the old 2 oz rule based on graduations and parallax issues reading of spring scales when everyone uses calibrated digital scales the past decade is BS. Tom 4 Quote

The "Intentionally foul hooking or snagging a fish" leaves room for "Oops, I didn't mean to snag or foul hook that fish"... I foul hooked a 6 pound bass once, never saw the fish until i got it into the net and then realized it was hooked in its side. Explained why it felt much bigger. But I didn't intend to foul hook it. What's the determiner for intention? Just curious.... 1 Quote

A-Jay Right, that's the assumption. Is interesting that is somewhat of an open-ended "question", if you will, in the rules. I was more or less throwing the question out there to.... 1 1 Quote

Glaucus Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 I consider the Georgia bass an illegitimate record. Very little information on the fish, almost 100 years old, no idea on the legitimacy of the scale/weight according to modern standards. Nice fish and all but I can't get behind it in these conversations. What I think doesn't matter though. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 3, 2019 Super User Posted July 3, 2019 California DFW fishing regulations Artical 1, 2.00 (d) & (c) clearly define snagging as illegal if the fish is hooked outside it's mouth intentionally or Unintentionally the fish must be released immediately. IGFA rules you must be compliant with state regulations. The California regulation limits some national tournaments because foul hooked fish are allowed in most states with the exception of bed fishing. Tom 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted July 3, 2019 Super User Posted July 3, 2019 Congratulations to Marabu Kiruta for having the most legitimate world record largemouth bass for 10 years now. Nobody has been able to beat him and there has been many people that have tried. 2 Quote

Super User jbsoonerfan Posted July 3, 2019 Super User Posted July 3, 2019 I have caught fish with a jerkbait and by the time they got done shaking and in the boat the only hook still in them is outside the mouth. Is that considered foul hooked? I'm assuming so. Quote

Is that considered foul hooked? I'm assuming so. The regs are what they are so you gotta abide by them. Besides can you prove that there were other hooks in there that shook free? I remember watching one tournament out in california and someone caught a fish and him and his marshall looked at the fish and tried to make the determination if it was hooked in or out of the mouth. This happened more than once and some kept their fish and others didn't risk it and threw them back. Quote
Arcs&sparks Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 ^^ Yeah the line has to be drawn somewhere. If said bait only had one treble would you still have “caught” it? Quote
