DIY senko rig help

Hello all,

I am new to the forum and glad to be here. I have been trying to remember a way this man in a video I watched and how he made homemade senko lures.

What I am really looking for is how he added a split shot to the hook. It wasnt like your regular setup with the split shot being 12 to 24 inches above the hook.

What he had done was taken line, tied a palomar around the eye of the hook, left about an inch of line from there, tied a knot, snd crimped a split shot on it.

He would then wacky rig a worm or texas rig one on the hook. After doing so, he would tie his line to the newly made jig. The effect he would get was a jig that danced a bit with the splitshot weighing the hook down fast when he twitched it. 

My question is this, is anybody familiar with this method and what is the process of making one of these?

Several companies make wacky jigs.  They do what you describe.

Thank you J Francho. I was thinking about grabbing those. I was interested in how the guy in the video would tie a freestyle style split shot off it. I'll try this.

My second largest NY caught bass (7-1) was on a Jackall Flick Shake worm rigged on a wacky jig.  It works well, especially when there's some wind and it's hard to keep the worm down.

Just give it a try.  Seems pretty straightforward to me.  In my experiences with senkos weighted hooks (1/16 oz in my case) out fish unweighted senkos - your experiences might yield different results.

 

Now, if you want to overthink it, like many of us have been known to do from time to time you've got decisions to make.

Do you want the weight crimped on to the hook or to the tag end of the Palomar knot?  What lb test of line are you going to throw?  If you're going with the weight crimped on to the hook (wacky jigs) do you want a brush guard or not?

Wide gap hook or round gap hook or Sproat style hook or circle hook?

You might need a dedicated senko rig.  Lead or steel split shot?  Need new pliers?  I'm pretty certain that once you get started there are other variables as well.

 

Lots of things to think about.  You're lucky you live in Colorado - you've got access to beers & stuff that I only have occasional access to.  Odells out of Fort Collins makes a great "thinking about stuff in the shop" beer - an APA called Drumroll.   Now don't think too much - put a rig together and go fishing.

What you are describing is a short drop shot but instead of using drop shot weights the person is using split shot. They also make the tag very short so you get the feel of something like a jika rig. I haven't used that because the wacky jig-aka flick shake, is just so effective in my water.

My brother always ties his wacky rigs with 4-6 inches of line hanging below the hook. He uses it un-weighted until he wants to fish deeper water then ads a split shot. Interestingly he will make a knot to hold the shot from sliding unless he is in rocky bottom areas.He always outfishes me.
