Daiwa Torx Screwdrivers

My new Daiwa Legalis LGLT2500D-XH just arrived via FedEx and I was surprised to see it has torx screws. I clean and oil my reels, and have precision screwdrivers, but I don’t have a set of torx screwdrivers. Parts diagram doesn’t list sizes of screws. Does anyone know the sizes required, inside and outside?

 

Also, I don’t want to spend $50 on a set of Wiha screwdrivers for a $55 reel. I’ve made it through most of life without ever needing a set of torx screwdrivers, and I doubt I’ll need them for anything else. I’m kind of considering returning/exchanging the reel, but if I could get by with spending a few bucks on a set I’d keep the reel. Everyone talks like anything cheaper than the best will booger the screws?

I think now a day most of driver bit set come with torx screw bit also. But yes it sucks to have to go into my tool box just for that. Daiwa is weird some reel use flathead and now torx. I might have to rethink getting Daiwa LT series.

This is my first Daiwa. I've tried Shimano and Pflueger spinning reels, so I wanted to try the other big player.

 

Maybe I should just call Daiwa and ask them about the sizes. If they can't tell me, that will seal the deal.

You can buy a set of small torx drivers for less than $10

I’m looking for either 1000d or 2000s. Can’t decide yet. I don’t want to spent too much on spinning setup I’m cheap you know lol.

I know plenty about cheap. This is a high-dollar reel to me. It replaces a reel that I had shimmed up with a piece of copper foil to keep it going - a $25 Shimano Sienna that I fished with regularly for 5 years.

Usually any assembly like a fishing reel requiring special tool the tool is supplied.

Not so with these reels. 2-3 different sizes are needed to fully disassemble these reels.

torx are not considered special tools.

Phillips (cross slot) , slotted and hex are USA standards, TorX is a special tool in every mechanic and aerospace tool box.

One job I worked at, we were building specialty parts-cleaning machines for companies like Seagate and Hutchinson Tech. Anytime the specs called for a Torx-head screw, we had to special order those...they are NOT standard. Slot, Phillips, Hex we carried in stock...those are the standard.

I disagree. It’s not a special tool. It’s not a proprietary tool specific to that reel. It’s just not a philips or flat bit. Torx are used in all sorts of things from computers, cell phones to bathroom fixtures. Very unspecial...haha

Anyone can buy torx drivers at any Home Depot or Amazon these days.

You can disagree but try introducing a TorX fasteners to US OEM's. Metric fasteners were suppose to be universal back in the 70's and still not universally accepted. 

I had to create ASTM standards for aerospace metric thread sizes for aerospace industry use in the interconnect industry. TorX is far from a standard use fastener.

Again, they can be bought so easily and are used in lots of different things. You said “special tools” would be supplied with the reel. Not in this case.

TorX is a non standard fastener, Daiwa is making a mistake not supplying special tools angler do not have to servive the reel. End of conversation.

I think Okuma also use torx screw with their spinning reels. And yes US IS WEIRD.

I remember first time I saw torx screw in microwave, I had to order the new set of bit. I thought they have it their so consumer cannot just open the thing too easy.

Nowadays a lot of wood fasteners also come with torx screw for strong fastened  since torx have more surface than other type, and yes they provide the bit (same as hex) in every package.
